First things first: Gau is a literally a wild child. He grew up alone on the grasslands of the faraway Veldt, and has spent most of his life among wild animals. This influences every aspect of his personality, from his bizzare feral mannerisms to his broken caveman English. He often speaks in third person, and breaks into growls or noises like "Uwaao!" or "Yaoh!" when he can't find the right words to express himself, and his reactions to things tend to be very animalistic and physical. Gau is constantly moving around, poking at things and exploring his surroundings, and if he has to sit still, he fidgets. He's still figuring out weird 'civilized' concepts like personal space, wearing proper clothes, listening when people talk to you, and these things called 'table manners' that people insist on using when they eat (seriously, why use forks and knives when you have hands?), and he sometimes acts more like a wild animal than a young boy.
That said, Gau is still basically just a 13-year-old kid. He's a bit wary and territorial around new people (Gau rarely interacted with other humans until he met Cyan and Sabin, and he was something of an urban legend in the nearby village of Mobliz), but is easily won over by kindness and free food, not necessarily in that order. Once he lets his guard down, Gau is a playful, energetic, and slightly bratty kid with a mischevious streak that's a mile wide, especially when it comes to teasing his friends - within minutes of befriending the main party, he gives Sabin a goofy nickname, goads him into a wrestling match, and later manages to sneak up behind him and startle the poor guy into dropping his wallet off a cliff. He values his friends more than anything though, and if he accidentally says something wrong or upsets them, he's always quick to apologize and back off. He's also extremely loyal - after all, he was willing to leave the Veldt in order to follow Cyan and Sabin around the world.
Despite not being able to string a coherent sentence together and having a slightly questionable attention span, Gau is much sharper and more mature than most people think. He was smart enough to survive on his own for thirteen years in a very harsh environment, after all, and when he meets his father for the first time, only to find that the old man is insane and doesn't remember having a son, he doesn't get upset... he just quietly lets it go, and is happy to know that he has a father at all.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Gau has a special ability called Rage, which lets him go into a trance during battle and use attacks that he's learned from animals on the Veldt. Since these animals are Final Fantasy monsters, this means that Gau can be clawing wildly at his opponent one minute, and floating several feet off the ground shooting fireballs the next. (I'm gonna say that Gau is stuck using physical attacks and weak magic for his stay in Vatheon - nothing beyond basic fire and ice spells.) The downside to this is that if Gau is attacking an opponent, then that's all he's doing. He's so deeply entranced that he literally can't stop fighting; he won't pause to heal or defend himself, and he can't snap out of it until the fight is over or he's knocked unconscious.
Other than that, Gau is still waaaay behind when it comes to social development. He can barely put two sentences together, he can't read or write, and he's never really comfortable in towns or cities. He's also afraid of heights.
[ Other Important Facts ] : Gau has a thing for shiny objects, and if he finds any lying around, he'll probably start collecting/hoarding them . He also occasionally runs on all fours, and doesn't like wearing shoes (or really, any clothes that aren't his own sash/shorts outfit). He also has an awesomely terrible mullet. Maybe that should go in the 'weaknesses' section.
