Happened to catch the
Bobby Friction and Nihal show on BBC Radio 1 this past Wednesday (12 April); among the various and sundry wonders that Bobby (Nihal was in Beijing) unveiled for the world's listening pleasure (Bhangra rap? no, seriously: Bhangra rap?!) was the bootleg of
DJ Ashis G's remix of the show-stopper "Kajra Re" from last year's
Bunty Aur Babli. Musically, I like the remix better, even though it's a very minor tweak, and even though it seems to run only half as long as
the original song; or maybe that git Bobby only played half of it 'cause he was afraid that the club kids would hang him from the nearest lamp post if he didn't yank that Bollywood shite off-air pronto.
Curious, I poked around and found
a site where you can view the dance number for "Kajra Re;" and I gotta say, it puts the
Chris Columbus-directed movie adaptation of Rent (which the missus forced me to watch a couple of weeks ago, apparently in lieu of a birthday birching) to shame. To shame, I tell you.
Also: the spaz who gets repeatedly shut down in the dance number, Bunty/Rakesh (Abhishek Bachchan), by the criminally delectable Aishwarya Rai -- who seems to have made a special guest appearance only for the duration of this song -- 'cause she's puttin' the moves on the supercop who's out to get Bunty/Rakesh and his partner Babli/Vimmi (Rani Mukherjee) -- District Commissioner of Police Dashrath Singh (Amitabh Bachchan, the once and former "angry young man" of Bollywood; Abhishek is his son)?
I feel ya, bra'. I really, really feel ya.
Ooooof.
EDITED at 2032 EDT/Monday, 17 April 2006: because I stupidly misidentified the lovely lass performing "Kajra Re" as the movie's female lead, Rani Mukherjee, instead of the prospective Bond girl Aishwarya Rai. But don't get your hopes up, Bond fans:
the lady herself has denied that she was ever approached by the producers, even before Pierce Brosnan got sacked as 007.
