Found this bit in Robert Graves' translation of Suetonius' The Twelve Caesars, in #52 of the section on Nero:
"As a boy Nero read most of the usual humanities subjects except philosophy which, [his mother] Agrippina [the Younger] warned him, was no proper study for a future ruler."
