The joys of cocooning.

Finally saw His Girl Friday (1940) the other night; this is of course the Howard Hawks-directed (and Charles Lederer-scripted) remake of Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur's 1928 play The Front Page (filmed in 1931 under the same title), starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. A couple of things surprised me:

1) The missus hated it. How anyone can like Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (and Kindergarten Cop, jeezus please-us...) and not like His Girl Friday because they think that the dialogue in HGF is "terrible" and "cheesy" beggars the imagination. Clearly, our marriage would've ended before our ancestors first crawled out of the sea five jillion years ago if it was based on a shared love of movies. (Or reading. Or art. Or music. But those are other rants.)

2) Rosalind Russell bears a striking resemblance to Drew Barrymore in this picture. Not so much vocally, or even in build, but facially. Here's some piccies to make my case. First, Rosalind Russell:

Now, Drew Barrymore:

The resemblance is more pronounced as you watch Russell's face in motion, of course. Now I'm curious to see Auntie Mame (1958; Russell was around 50 years old when she made it) for a sneak peek at Barrymore's future phiz.
