The Stress of buying a house.

I thought it had all gone too smoothly. From our offer being accepted to getting the mortgage, to arranging a solicitor to getting insurance sorted, all the parts clicked together nicely with minimum stress. I was beginning to wonder what all the fuss was about. Almost everyone I know has had stress when buying a house. Something always seems to go wrong.

Then on Friday my solicitor phones up to tell me that we don't actually have a mortgage arranged. There had been a cock up by the Coventry where the rate they had quoted was less than what they sent out with the paperwork. My mortgage advisor spotted it and asked them to resend the paperwork with the rate that was quoted. Unfortunatey because of the way the system is set-up, they couldn't just modify the rate so they cancelled the mortgage and now have to send out a new offer which takes time.

On Friday when my solicitor informed me of the good news I was under the impression we had already exchanged contracts with a completion date set for the 8th and I knew that there was a charge for every day late completing.

I spend the whole afternoon Friday stressing at people down the phone and getting myself all worked up trying to resolve the problem. Even saying I'd accept the offer with the wrong rate. Unfortunately thay had cancelled it and it can't be resurrected. Then it turns out that the solicitor was about to exchange when she checked that the money was there and discovered this little turn of events. At least we will not be out of pocket.

It does mean that the earliest we can collect the keys for the new place now is the 13th and not the 8th as we had originally planned. This leaves us a bit tighter than we would have liked for handing the keys back on the fully cleaned flat on the 24th but it is not the end of the world, but still pretty stressful.

It looks like we will now be moving on the 18th, which is a shame as Lorraine had really wanted to dance that night at a private party somewhere outside Bristol where the troupe would have been paid well. :(

If anyone is free on the 18th we would greatly appreciate some help moving our furniture. I have taken a few days off to move all the small stuff so it should only be the big stuff, like desks and shelves. We plan to have a BBQ afterwards and according to www.metcheck.com the weather should be fairly decent.
