Chapter Twelve
The clock ticked away.
It was almost past midnight now but the man lying helplessly on the hospital bed still did not show any signs of waking up for the second time that night. Jaejoong still had not left his side- he got up a few times though, pacing the room nervously but still ended up waiting by the bed side yet again after mere seconds later. His hands were clenching hard the other’s cold sweaty ones.
Jaejoong was about to dozed off in a tired sleep when the door to Yunho's private hospital room suddenly swung wide open… and there she was; a furious Park Ga Jin, waiting to strangle any human being that stands in her way.
It took a while for Jaejoong to register the image in his mind because of the dimly lit room and the fact that he was almost fast asleep, and when he finally came to his senses, Ga Jin was already half-way approaching him.
“You! What did you do to him?!” Ga Jin shouted as she grabbed randomly at Jaejoong’s loosen shirt and tried with all her luck to hit the other guy wherever she seemed appropriate to. Jaejoong slowly backed away as he tried to stop Ga Jin from going into a full rampage in the middle of the room… with a very sick Yunho to add in.
“Will you stop?!” Jaejoong managed to hiss. He did not want to shout at the girl, no matter how much she really made him feel like to but heck; they were in the freaking hospital in the middle of the night… and shouting back at her would not make things any better.
“I didn’t do anything for fuck’s sake, stop it woman!” Jaejoong pushed Ga Jin away, hard enough to free him from the wild hands of the petite girl that had been jabbing him all over his sore body… and to his luck, Ga Jin surprisingly stopped.
For a while there, she stood almost lifelessly that it made Jaejoong felt nervous than ever. What if Ga Jin suddenly turned to a psychopath overnight and approached him on a full speed and drew out her invisible weapon and killed him right there and then? Jaejoong shook his head vigorously, trying to get rid of the disturbing images playing on repeat on his mind. It was too disturbing to the point that at this exact moment, Jaejoong almost wished he was in Yunho's place instead.
Though her legs were wearing her out now, Ga Jin mustered every ounce of energy left in her body and moved forward to the side of the bed. She looked at her pale-looking fiancé, feeling somewhat scared to see the state that he was in-wires all over his body, machines beeping at a slow rate to the sound of his heartbeat, and my… how he looked almost… not in this world.
“Yunho-sshi, don’t leave me.”
Ga Jin plopped down on the empty chair just beside the hospital bed. She held out her trembling hands and grabbed Yunho's weak ones. She kissed softly the tip of his fingers and incautiously caressed them on her moistened cheek.
Not wanting to witness this little scene in front of him now, Jaejoong-who was standing at the corner of the room all along- immediately rushed towards the door. Though he was worried sick and desperately wanted to be there with Yunho, Jaejoong knew it would only be too awkward to be in the same room with the little witch named Park Ga Jin. He was not ready to start yet another war with her, no, not now and certainly not here.
His hand was already on the doorknob when suddenly Jaejoong heard the soft yet audible call of his own name.
“… Jaejoong.”
And that was enough to stop him from exiting the room and back at Yunho’s side. He pretended not to see the death glare Ga Jin was giving him and went straight to cater to Yunho's needs. Jaejoong watched anxiously as Yunho's eyes fluttered open rather slowly-it was probably painful for him to do so since it took him quite a while until they were fully opened.
A smile immediately crept on Yunho's face when his vision finally focused on Jaejoong.
“Get the doctor!” Jaejoong exclaimed, ordering Ga Jin out of the blue.
Taken aback, Ga Jin tried to protest but Yunho's sudden choke made her forget about her intention and immediately went out to get the doctor as fast as she can. After a few steps though, Ga Jin halted. Yunho's parents and her own father were already inches away from the door and she could only gaped as she ran towards her father's arms.
“He’s awake.”
*
“Next time, you better be careful son.” President Jung stated bluntly; his tone was more of a rage rather than worry. His wife patted lightly on his shoulder, as if asking her husband to calm down. They were, in fact, witnessing their living son despite the huge car crash he was involved in. And plus, Ga Jin’s father was with them too.
And so was Jaejoong.
Not that it mattered of course, since he was standing very quietly indeed at the corner of the room. He wanted to desperately get out of the room but President Jung, his wife and Ga Jin’s father were totally blocking the door, making it impossible for him to just up and leave. The way that President Jung eyed him made him feel as if the old man wanted to rip open his heart any seconds now. Perhaps, Ga Jin had spilled out her ugly lies about Jaejoong to President Jung. Perhaps.
“You. What are you doing here?”
Jaejoong’s throat went dry this instance. Cold sweats rapidly formed on his forehead due to the sudden adrenaline rush. He stole a glance towards Yunho and the latter looked back at him with tired eyes, anxious nonetheless.
“I… I got a call from the hospital, Mr. President. I rushed here as fast as I can,” Jaejoong explained truthfully. He looked swiftly at Ga Jin who was standing behind President Jung-her eyes were shooting fires at him.
“Good. I need you to take care of things at the company starting tomorrow while he’s here,” President Jung said, as if it was the most normal thing to say at that time. It was as if he completely ignored the fact that his only son was lying helplessly on the hospital bed and that the only thing mattered more to him was his company.
Jaejoong, however, was somewhat confused.
So he hasn't found out about it… yet.
“Uh… but Mr. President, your son’s fired me,” Jaejoong knowingly raised a brow.
Scoffing a little, President Jung looked at Jaejoong unimpressed.
“Didn't I tell you beforehand, Kim Jaejoong-sshi? You work for me and not for my son.”
Jaejoong nodded almost immediately. He lowered his gaze, not wanting to witness the rage in Ga Jin’s eyes and not strong enough to look at Yunho's. So President Jung hasn't found out about it. So Ga Jin hasn't found the right time to tell her lies. So he hasn't been fired after all.
What a fucked up situation we have here.
Everything else after that seemed out of this world to Jaejoong when once again, President Jung blatantly stated something so… inappropriate at that time.
“I warn you, son. Be extra careful next time. I can’t afford to lose my only heir. And keep this in mind; Mr. Park and I…,” he looked at President Park for confirmation as the old man nodded in response before continuing, “… we decided to immediately proceed with your wedding as soon as you get better. No more excuses this time. The sooner, the better.”
Yunho almost choked upon air. Ga Jin beamed somewhat relieved and Jaejoong… he felt numb.
“Come on now, let’s go home. He’s going to be okay,” President Jung finally wrapped up. He puts a hand atop Mrs. Jung and rushed her towards the door.
“Kim Jaejoong-sshi, look after him a bit before you go home. I still need you at work tomorrow,” he said one last time before they exited the room. He did not even bother to bid a proper goodbye to Yunho, to which the latter felt like a sharp jab on his heart.
“Come on now, sweetie. Let’s go home,” President Park ushered his daughter to follow through but the timid girl froze in her spot.
“No. I’m going to stay here and look after Yunho-oppa,” Ga Jin hissed. She rolled her eyes at her father and hurriedly claimed the empty spot beside Yunho's hospital bed. Jaejoong tried so hard to fight the urge to shake his head over the rudeness of Ga Jin towards her own father.
What a spoiled brat.
“No, you’re going to come home with me, Ga Jin-ah. Kim Jaejoong-sshi here will take care of Yunho-sshi,” President Park insisted. He firmly grabbed Ga Jin by her arms, receiving a protest in the process but that did not stop him from doing so. He bowed a little before exiting the room with her raging daughter. Ga Jin managed to glare one last time towards Jaejoong. The latter pretty much was immune to it by now, though.
When he finally realized that he was now alone with the conscious Jung Yunho, Jaejoong gulped. He felt his heartbeat raced faster than the Grand Prix… if that was even possible.
Jaejoong hesitated for a while, whether he should get close to the hospital bed or not. He was, indeed, still standing at the corner of the room. He looked towards Yunho and immediately darted his gaze somewhere else when their eyes met. He stayed still over there and shifted his legs once in a while, not knowing what else to do.
Yunho, on the other hand, just wished that the latter would just stop and sit at the empty chair beside his bed. When their eyes finally met once again, Yunho immediately made sure that he was heard by Jaejoong when he said, “Would you just sit, Jaejoong-ah.”
Jaejoong froze, not giving a respond right away.
After contemplating rather extremely in his mind, Jaejoong finally gave in. He forced his legs to walk towards the empty chair and plopped down just as he got there. He looked down on his lap, fumbling with his fingers nervously. He stayed quiet in his seat, eyes were everywhere except on Yunho's.
“I’m sorry.”
Yunho finally broke the silence after what seemed like an eternity. The apology came out softer, like a heave of breath. Jaejoong could not tell whether he was being sincere or he was just being, well… apologetic.
“For what?” Jaejoong asked coldly. He still refused to look Yunho in the eyes.
“For doubting you. For hurting you… I’m sorry for everything, Jaejoong-ah,” Yunho explained.
He wanted to get up from the bed but the pain it caused him when he tried to do so sent him back down again. Jaejoong, too, stopped him in reflex and he cursed himself under his breath for being so careless. He should not have cared, no he should not.
“Do you need me for anything else before I go? It’s getting late and I think I should go now,” Jaejoong immediately changed the subject. He would not want to continue with the complicated topic Yunho chose to start.
Feeling disappointed, Yunho forced an understanding nod.
“No, that’s okay. I’ll be fine… thank you,” Yunho tried to smile but it came out somewhat weird and… sad. He wanted Jaejoong to stay a little longer, just for the sake of having him here. It made him feel at ease but Yunho knew, what he did to Jaejoong was way overboard. He might have just lost the latter forever this time… forever.
Jaejoong gave a small nod before taking out his cell phone. At this hour, it was probably going to be hard for him to find a cab so he decided to turn to Yamapi, instead. He knew somehow he could depend on the older man.
“He’s not really your boyfriend, is he?” Yunho suddenly asked, as if knowing that Jaejoong was indeed, texting the latter.
“No,” Jaejoong truthfully answered.
“… but he’s more than you will ever be,” he finished.
Yunho's head immediately dropped low after hearing that. He felt a huge pang in his heart. He could not look Jaejoong in the eyes anymore, he felt ashamed of himself. Ashamed to the point that he wished he was somewhere else but there right now. Jaejoong's words hit him like no other. He wanted to plead, he wanted to explain how stupid he was for doing what he did to Jaejoong, and he wanted to cry for a second chance… but no. Yunho somehow knew it.
He had completely lost Jaejoong.
“I’m truly sorry, Jaejoong-ah. If there’s anything I could do to make you forgive me, I would.”
“I forgive you,” Jaejoong replied easily. He raised his gaze and met with Yunho's hopeful eyes just as fast.
“… But I can never forget. You know that, right?” Jaejoong's eyes looked so distant it scared Yunho so much. It was as if he did not recognize him anymore.
“I thought I loved you… but then love isn't supposed to hurt like this, isn't it? And you… you've hurt me more than anyone else in my life,” Jaejoong said. The expression he wore on his face right now was lifeless.
Yunho did not like what he sees… and he certainly would not like what he would hear next,
“That’s when I finally realized… this isn't love. It never is.”
TBC.
