Been an enjoyably active weekend so far. On Friday, I escaped work and saw
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead at
The Studio Theater. An marvelous script to begin with, it was produced with equal excellence. If all of their productions are this brilliant, I may end up spending a good deal more Saturday I woke up early to make my first hajj to Frank Lloyd Wright's
Falling Water. I only brought a sketch book and ended up with perhaps two decent pieces. The crowds were distracting, turning what could have been a wonderfully spiritual experience into something resembling an amusement park, completed all the more by an annoying tour guide more keen on the Kaufmann's wide collection of art work ("oh, look, another Picasso") and the annoying twelve year old whose parents had no sense of discipline. What a waste of DNA. I was nearly compelled to toss him off of one of the many terraces onto the watery rocks 40 feet below. Otherwise, the building was sophisticated; I only wish we'd had more time to slowly amble through the rooms rather than being quickly shepherded through in order to make way for the thousand odd daily visitors. I need to go on a weekday when those visiting are pilgrims rather than spectators.
This morning, I took a walk down U Street to read
The Post over a cup of coffee. Meanwhile, torrents of Harley Davidsons carried
Buffalo Soldiers to some sort of Memorial Day event staged at the African American Civil War Memorial. What a vicious growl these machines made; I could imagine a deep-bass soldier's battle cry replacing the harsh grumblings of petrol-driven chariots.
If I were in Charlottesville, I would probably be up at
Blue Hole, battling the crowds to jump feet first into deep pool of mountain water. In lieu of such pleasures, I'll be headed down to
Gravelly Point with a picnic lunch to watch tin fly while finishing The Post and perusing a few books. Later, a 4pm rehearsal for
next weekend's Camerata concert. (My Kennedy Center debut!) Despite the somewhat pricey ticket ($30) and MelissaDawnRedneck, the concert is shaping up to be pretty damn solid with a number of works which are new-to-me and a few which are just recently published.
I think I've given up on going into work this weekend.
Now to decide tomorrow's schedule :: to stick around DC or to head down home for a neighborhood barbecue.
