#Unitarians a #cult ? @ColbertReport

Stephen Colbert reported tonight that Billy Graham has Unitarians on a list of cults. I know Unitarian Universalism is too long to say (or list), just like The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which is the official name of Mormons (now Unitarian Universalism doesn't sound so long, does it?). We do shorten it ourselves, though, to UU.

That's true IF Graham used the correct definition for the word "cult". You're right, Graham doesn't know what a cult is and by his definition any non-Christian religion would be a cult. We were discussing this in another forum about how Unitarians (1908) and Universalists (in the 1940s) were refused membership in the Federal Council of Churches, so we haven't been considered a Christian religion since then.

According to Merriam Webster, they have many definitions that looks like every religion is a cult: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cult I think #5 is the one we usually use - one that's a "fad" and UU is definitely not a fad or a devotion to an individual or object or work (as a film or book). Some people do say UUism is a movement, but I think it would still need to be a "fad" as well, but we've been well established for over 50 yrs. and came out of religions that were centuries old.

Someone in another forum said: All i wanted more was him ending with a shot of "cult leader" William Howard Taft, President, Supreme Court Chief Justice, Unitarian, and Republican---now THAT might have gotten us some hits.
