Acrid smoke from Interior wildfires drifted into Anchorage, the Mat-Su and other areas of Alaska on Monday, irritating eyes and throats, prompting health warnings and disappointing visitors who expected Alaska's legendary clear skies and long-distance vistas.
Many tourists in downtown Anchorage seemed not to notice the haze. "I'm from Washington, D.C.," said Mike Gordon. "I'm used to it being like this."
So was Denver Gore, a Los Angeles-area resident who had just arrived with his family. "This is actually pretty clean," he said.
I feel sorry for people who have such bad air quality all the time.
