Mail to Me

A friend of mine is doing a project for one of her classes, called "Note to Self".  This is the criteria:  " Send a message to your younger self. What would you say? How would you say it? Through words, pictures, video, poetry, prose?

Submit your message to your younger self onto the event page. The goal is to appreciate the connections in our hopes, our memories, our regrets, our warnings, our “words of wisdom.”

Here is my entry:

Dear You (You of My past, "before" You, You who should but can never hear this),

What can I tell You that You haven't already heard in a dozen ignored clichés? Because I hate to tell You, darling, that they have become so overused and repeated for a reason. Before You start panicking, DON'T WORRY, there are exceptions to the rule; for example, I promise You that high school won't be the best years of Your life.

Do what is best for You. Don't forget other people. but don't forget Yourself either. You can't make Them happy until You make Yourself happy.

THINK before You act; consequences are painful things.

Fall in love - this is Me being hopefully hypocritical. Maybe if I tell You it's okay, You'll get around to it faster than I am.

They mean well. No, really. Stop laughing!

Some more practical advice to leave with You:

Wear winter boots, a scarf, mitts, and a hat. She was right when She said that it's better to look stupid but be warm.

Drink less coffee. Having a headache every day that You can't get Your hands on a cup (or four) is not worth it.

Don't wear heels on days You'll be on Your feet a lot - it sounds obvious, but You will do it hundreds of times and regret it every single time.

Most of all though, know that no matter what, You'll be okay.

Love and strength from,
Me.
