Derek Stiles's File

History: Derek's interest in medicine started with the devastating loss of his father from an illness that the doctors had no cure for when Derek was just a young boy. Determined to find the cures with expiration dates, he studied hard and soon made his name as a surgeon at Hope Hospital in Angeles Bay at the age of 26 after completing his residency. Although his father is forever gone, he passes on his respect for life into his patients and tries to save them at any cost. It was at Hope Hospital that he began to make a name for himself as a surgeon. Here, he met the fiery blonde nurse, Angie Thompson, who was constantly on his case about the lack of attention and patient care. He also learned of his special ability, the "Healing Touch", a power of the Greek god Asclepius that granted Derek enhanced concentration and superhuman reflexes to save patients from certain death in surgery.

When an outbreak of a terrorist-created disease, the viruses of G.U.I.L.T., Caduceus International recognized Derek's abilities and offered him the job of assisting in the eradication of the viruses. Angie at his side, the two worked for Caduceus USA and helped to stop the strains throughout their area, then moving to help other branches of Caduceus elsewhere in the world. He had even fallen into the disease's trap while in the UK and was saved by Dr. Naomi Kimishima and Angie. After the surgery, Angie's emotions, usually very calm and cool and hidden behind her preciseness, were unavoidable and his feelings for her began to unsurface. Once the GUILT threat had been diminished, he took advantage of a required trip to Paris for Caduceus to try and propose to Angie at the Eiffel Tower. Ring in his pocket and a beautiful speech prepared well in advanced, he took her up near the top and got down to one knee, reaching his hand into his pocket and watching her eyes flutter... before he saw her eyes leave him and look down as the box fell down to the ground below. Embarrassed, they went downstairs and he tried once more, but forgot everything he had planned to say and only managing to stutter out the question. Thankfully, she accepted.

Not wanting to rush into marriage just yet, they continued their travels around the world to help finish off the GUILT threats, ending up in the Republic of Costigar, Africa, and aiding the injured soldiers that were caught between a civil war between tribes, as well as increasing the healthcare available to the natives. Eventually, Caduceus USA called them back to the States once more, and Derek was introduced to the overly friendly yet beautiful woman named Reina Mayuzumi who ran Acropolis Pharmaceuticals and wanted Derek to work under her. Angie was well angered, although oblivious Derek wasn't sure why, she talked him out of it since it would take away from performing the surgeries that save patients: what Derek loved most of all. Derek turned Mayuzumi down, both the job offer and her other more personal propositions, and shifted his attention to reassuring Angie that he was quite innocent (and extremely ignorant of the fact that Mayuzumi was flirting with him). In reassuring Angie, they finally set the date and married in front of a few of their closest friends and collegues.

Not long after their honeymoon returned them to work, Derek had been approached once more by Mayuzumi who, after realizing that Derek put his patients first, offered him the perfect job for him -- Director of his own hospital. She had recently had a hospital built on an island that would focus on curing all kinds of incurable types of diseases, ailments, and problems. He considered it, and was highly excited at the prospect of the new job, and talked it through with his new bride. After a long hesitation, Angie agreed and the two soon packed their things for Utopia.

Journal Sample:
Another night getting home in the A.M. and I'm unable to sleep even after being on my feet all day. Angie managed to get off earlier, because I had hoped that I wouldn't be far behind, but it seems that she's resting peacefully in the bed behind me and doesn't even know that anyone exists outside of her pleasant dreams right now. I'd hate to disturb her. She's probably a little upset at me anyways... I saw that she cooked tonight, and my plate was cold on the kitchen table. I managed to heat it up and try some of it, but after sitting out on the table most of the night, I didn't want to risk it and I ended up throwing it away. It looked delicious.... I hope the two of us can have a day off some time in the next week. I could use the break, and I'd like to take her to one of the smaller islands nearby for the day.

For now, I think I will try to fall asleep. I'm not really tired, but I know that as soon as I hit the pillow and she manages to roll over and curl up next to me, I'll be gone until that alarm clock goes off.... in three hours.

With a fluid-like motion, his hand reached up and pushed the frames of his glasses further up to rest comfortably at the bridge of his nose and the glare from the bright hospital lumination cleared within his lenses so that his hazel eyes could be seen looking down to read all the fine lines of the chart in his hands. The patient that currently sat on the other side of his wide mahogany desk was fumbling with her hands as Dr. Stiles set down the paperwork and smiled warmly to try and ease her nervousness.

"Miss Gordon, I can imagine how rough it must have been for you to deal with this for so long. A few years ago, a doctor would have looked at this chart and given you a couple of weeks to tell your friends and family goodbye. Thankfully, you have been brought to this island and put under my care. We have the best doctors and cures for diseases that no one else has discovered yet. I have personally dealt with a case similar to yours before. You will be feeling like yourself again soon."

The young woman's eyes widened and he could sense the softness in them that gave away her emotions before a brilliant smile burst out among her features. She stood and bowed graciously in front of him, "T-Thank you, Doctor!"

Derek closed the manilla folder closed and pushed away from his desk, standing to his feet and walking over to reach out his hand in a friendly gesture, glad the girl seemed to be looking more colorful, at least, with the new pinks that had been long gone from her cheeks for so long. As the girl looked down to his hand, she grinned and embraced him instead.

"Derek, there is a patient on the fifth floor..." Angie walked into the Director's office and stared at the young woman whose arms were wrapped around her husband. "Should I come back?"

Derek winced, hearing the snap in her tone, "Miss Gordon, please take this folder back to your nurses for me and get some rest. I'll be sure to start your treatment this afternoon. Promise."

The Gordon girl, ignoring the jealous nurse's presence all together, nodded happily and nearly bounced out of the room. Once the door shut, Derek looked over to Angie with the most fearful face he could produce, "I told her that she wouldn't have to worry about her asthma anymore. Despite the fact that she wasn't cured, she got pretty excited nonetheless. You should.. um.. look at her files later. I'm going to start her on medicine later... really."

"Really, Doctor?"

Out of all the diseases that Derek had faced off with, it was at that moment that he decided that he'd take them all on again in an instant before he ever wanted to deal with his wife when she was really pissed off.
