Chapter Seven: Dark Side **
July 19, 2004
I told Johnny to never ever come near me again and I went to work. I finished my article and gave it to Katherine to submit in the September issue. Work was hell just like my evening trying to get home. All of the cabs were taken so I walked. Half way to my apartment --two guys stopped me on the street. What was I? A permanent victim? Was there an effin sign that said "attack me please?!" I tried to get past them but it did not work.
"Don't you want to hang out with us?" The first guy asked.
"No." I rudely told him while making attempt to leave.
"Fiesty." The second guy with short blond hair and green eyes laughed. If the guys weren't harassing me then I would ask for their numbers.
"I'll give you my money if you let me go."
"We don't want money." The first guy told me. He had longer brown hair than Johnny, light brown eyes, and had on a circle pendant with a star and blue gems around it... just like Johnny's.
"We want something else... something warm and red." The green eyed guy with the same pendant spoke up. His pendant had clear gems instead of blue.
"Nice nick." The guy with brown hair pointed out.
"You'll have one too if you don't move away from her." I knew that voice. Johnny pushed them away from me. "Go find another meal."
"I'm hungry, Bardai, and you said that she was perfect." The blonde guy looked up at the brown eyed, Bardai.
"Shut up Fontur! Evidently Johnny had his eye on this lady way before us." He smirked.
"Bardai and Fontur!" Johnny fumed. "Just go." The two disappeared into an alley.
"Can you not stay out of trouble?!" He grabbed my arm and pulled me down the street like I was a child.
"It's not like I yelled in the middle of the street asking guys to attack me!" I spat back.
"Angelina!" He looked back at me. "You are walking down this part of New York with a healing cut on your neck."
"Johnny let go of my arm." He didn't listen. "Johnny!"
"Angie shut up!" Without delay I shushed and followed him. He let go of my arm after another block.
I looked at my red wrist. "Asshole, you hurt me."
Next thing I know-- I'm being pulled into a dark alley and pressed against a brick wall. Johnny silenced me with a kiss. He pulled back and whispered into my ear that he was sorry. I was about to say something but he pressed his index finger on my lips and looked at the entrance of the dead end alley. We both heard the clicking of heels against the ground coming our way. A lady, mainly in all black, walked towards us.
"Niruna."
"Johnny."
"It's a pleasure to meet you again."
"I'd say the same; however, I've given up lying for the moment."
"You two know each other." I accidentaly said aloud.
"You could say that." Her statement was filled with bitterness. "Your friend almost killed me."
"And I curse that I didn't."
"Don't worry. I won't hurt you."
"You can't even if you wanted to."
She whipped out a knife and threw it towards my chest. Johnny caught it with his hand, then threw it back to her. She kicked it with her foot sending it flying through the air again. The knife flew into the brick wall next to my head. The two of them began fighting and when I say fighting I don't mean movie fighting or punch-punch, kick-kick fighting. I mean kick ass fighting. Niruna threw three daggers at Johnny. I could tell she wanted to hurt him but not kill him. Johnny kicked two of them but the third hit him in the arm. He pulled the dagger out and dropped it to the ground as he tackled Niruna to the ground. She flipped him off of her and punched him in the chest. He then held her arm behind her back and drop kicked her. I could hear her growl as she shot her hand out towards me. I looked at her empty hand and a small smile crossed my face. Then it was quickly erased as the five daggers on the ground levitated and were all aimed at me. I could tell that she wanted to hurt me and kill me. Johnny knocked her hand away from my direction and all of the knives flew at me but stopped a mere two inches away from my body. I stared at the dagger that was barely shaking in front of my eyes. It was as if they were trying to get towards me with all of their might.
Johnny stood up, pulling her body up with him, and he held his hand out towards me and the army of knives. I hadn't noticed that they had doubled to ten. He made a motion with his hands, beckoning the knives to come to him, as he held Niruna by her neck. I watched as the knives obeyed like loyal dogs. They all turned and faced Johnny and Niruna. Niruna struggled to get out of Johnny's grip but it was too late. He whistled thus making the knives dart into Niruna's body. Johnny didn't get cut because they all were aimed at Niruna. He dropped her body and began to slowly pull the knives out. She wasn't dead yet so he prolonged the pain.
"I thought you loved me." She coughed. "A young fool I was." He pulled out another knife.
"I did once. But I was hungry and you would've been dead if I was experienced then."
"I was your first?"
"Yes, sadly. I still had a huge heart then. I couldn't just let you lay there and slowly die. I had to make you like me so you could still live. Then as time passed, I began to love you."
"What happened?"
"You ran off with Diego. " Pain returned so he pulled out another knife. "You and him is what happened."
"I had to--" She began to say but didn't want to hear it anymore. He licked the next blade clean then cut the design from his pendant on her stomach. I ran away from Niruna's body and Johnny. I ran from the alley. I ran away from the darkness and those who were dark themselves. I ran home like I was Forest Gump. When I got home I locked the door and made my way to my bed. I took two strong aspirins and hoped all of this was a nightmare.
11pm
I woke up cold. The big window to my apartment was wide open and the curtains blew back. I walked to the window to close them but I felt a presence in the room. I closed the window and turned around to face Johnny. Blood stained his once white buttoned down shirt. His teeth were no longer protruded but they were covered in the thick red liquid too. I cautiously walked towards him. His eyes looked innocent but everything else screamed "Killer!" I unbuttoned his shirt slowly and took it off of his body. His body. Wow. The full moon's light displayed what a great body he had. I left him to throw the shirt in to the washer. When I returned, he was sitting on the edge of the bed watching my every move. He studied me just like I studied him.
"There's more like you."
"Many. There are even some worst than us."
"Thank you for protecting me." I meekly thanked him. "What do they and you want with me?"
"You are like us but underdeveloped."He chuckled. "They really don't know why they are attracted to you but I do."
"Well can you enlighten me on that?" I sat down next to him. A part of me still liked him but the other was afraid of him. He could sense the fear and so could I.
He took my hand in his and kissed the back while pulling me a little closer. "I want you to trust me because I would never hurt you. I promised Joe Balducci that I would take care of his 'little angel' and I keep my word." He looked straight in to my eyes as he uttered every word.
"So you knew my great-grandfather?" How could this be possible. He's lying! I'm just stressed and creating all of this. I do tend to have a vivid imagination.
"Yes I did and no I am not lying. I can read minds and I an tell that you are doubting me already." He stood and pulled me with him. He wrapped his arm around my waist while intertwining his pale fingers with my light brown fingers. His eyes roamed over my now fragile body before they landed on my own pair of brown eyes. He looked deeply into my eyes-- into my soul. "Read me." He said in a low whisper. It was low but very audible. Then and only then did I notice that his soft lips never parted. His lips, redden by Niruna's blood, had not moved once. How? I know I heard him. I kept my eyes locked on his. I saw the golden flecks in his eye glow and swirl. His eyes became a little lighter. "Read me Angie." He repeated. This time I watched his lips. "Read me. You have to." They still did not move. "You are the one. Do not forget who you deeply are." He closed his eyes and waited. Johnny waited as if his life depended on my response. He waited as if I was the only one that could set him free from this hell hole. What could I do? How could I possibly help him when I no longer can help myself now?
"I can't." I said aloud. I stepped back from him ouut of fear of what his response would be. I could tell that I hurt him more than he had hurt Niruna earlier. He stood there still. Deadly still. "I can't Johnny." I told him again to make sure that he and I heard it clearly.
Johnny stood before me. He opened his eyes and looked at me. His gaze burned through my body. His gaze was different than before. His normal dark chocolate brown eyes had turned to a light brown and then to a greenish brown. Slivers of lavendar creeped into the pair of eyes that looked back at me with hurt and rage. His smile faded as his nails grew. Two of his teeth grew until they protruded. Razor sharp they were. Niruna's blood disappeared leaving them white again. He transformed before me... into a vampire. He, the man, the actor was no more. He, the vampire, was here in front of my face. He no longer hid what he was. He no longer hid the fire that burned so deep with in him. I could feel the heat of rage and passion radiate from him. There was a passion of love and a passion of hatred. He was going through a mental battle and for some reason I could understand bits and pieces of the argument. Was I reading him with out trying?
He ran his hands through his hair and sighed. He looked back into my eyes and spoke to me in a dead language. The language echoed into my ear becoming crystal clear. "I know you understand" he said in English. He was right. I heard him tell me that I am the female version of him. He shook his head in disbelief once he noticed that I still partially feared him. He returned to normal: dark brown eyes, regular teeth, and a sad smile upon his face. I watched as he walked towards my bed. I watched him carefully. He stopped only a few inches from me. My heart stopped beating for a second, my breathe was gone, my body was frigid, and my eyes didn't blink. "Here." He handed me a card with the name of a hotel an his room number on the front. "Stop by tomorrow night if you change your mind." My heart began to beat again, my breathe returned only to make me gasp, my body relaxed, and my eyes closed. He made this happen. It all ended after he walked out of my bedroom. By the time my body returned to its normal state he was standing in the door frame. His back leaned against the frame and his eyes on me. I walked towards him to officially see him out.
