James 1, Proverbs 13
I think I should just let you guys write this blog, and I'll just sit back and moderate.
Seriously.
Yesterday's experiment was done in the anticipation that most students would think one thing when it comes to purity: sex. It seems that 99% of the messages and talks we here on the topic of purity focus on that one particular topic. However, I wanted the blogotional to focus on so much more than just that. But to prove my point, I wanted to see what you would say, then everyone of you hit the nail on the head. Beginning with Tori on myspace, and Sennit in the LJ world, each comment dealt with purity being much more than just about one topic. So yeah, y'all got it.
If it was only that easy to live it.
The Bible says so much about purity. In II Timothy, we're urged to flee youthful lusts that entangle our soul. James 1:27 even talks about what pure and undefiled religion looks like. So purity is about more than just sex. It's about the way we think, the way we talk, the way we dress, our motives, and yes, it's also about purity in the area of sex.
We're going to spend the better part of this week and next week, focuses on these topics. It won't always be easy. Some of it will challenge you. Some of it will probably leave you a little mad. There's nothing wrong with that.
I love what Brandon had to say on the last comment I received so far. He said he was a trombonist and that the first thing that he thought of when it came to purity was the pure sound that comes out when you play an instrument just right. A pure sound...
If we were to apply that idea spiritually, here's the picture I get. Our bodies are the instrument and God is the musician. Together, we are able to make the most beautiful music. However, every impurity in the instrument leads to a sound that is a little off key. The beautiful is adulterated by the tainted. The fault is not in the musician but in the equipment.
However, too many people that fail see only the imperfections. We think that once we mess up (in any area of purity), that we're already tainted so really what's the use? However, our Master Musician doesn't see things that way. When he sees the worn out, tattered instrument of our lives, he only sees potential. And if we confess our impurities to him, he is able to reshape our lives and bring in a purity we've never known. A purity of thought, a purity of action, a purity of motive, a purity of speech.
God's desire is for us to be pure. And honestly, when we live purely, we realize that we're enjoying life a whole lot more. We feel better about ourselves, we feel better about others. Like I said, it's not always easy, but it is, in the end, worth it.
Stay strong.
And this weekend, try to live more purely than you have in the past.
Hope to see ya tomorrow and Sunday!
