Comic Reviews

Happy C2E2 weekend! I'm kinda jealous that I didn't go, but that was my choice and I'll have to deal with it. :(

Detective Comics #863 - The final Rucka issue, to much sadness. It ends pretty well, though. This short arc followed both Batman and Batwoman chasing seemingly the same bad guy, but for some reason not interacting with each other. Ends up that Batwoman is chasing a criminal Batman put away in the past, highlighting how she is just as competent as her male counterpart. It ends with a cliffhanger that we probably won't see the resolution of. Hopefully Williams III can continue the awesomeness when he takes over writing Batwoman in the future.

The Amazing Spider-Man #627 - Spider-Man finds the Juggernaut in Central Park and spends the issue looking for why he's there. It features Spider-Man going all detective, which is a nice change. The issue was okay, but both Spider-Man and Peter spent a lot of time chasing down clues, only to have the answer present itself nonetheless. So, a lot of time wasted getting nowhere. Hope it pays off well.

The Boys #41 - Hughie spends some time watching yet another maladjusted superteam while Mother's Milk is suspicious of Butcher's motives. There's a lot of stuff coming to a head, but nothing pays off in this issue.

Demo-Volume II #3 - My favorite Demo issue to date. It follows a young woman who lives her life by following what her Post-It notes tell her to do until she finds a note from someone else. It was a sweet little kinda-sorta-love story. Becky's art just shines.

Electric Ant #1 - A retelling of Phillip K. Dick's story about an android that doesn't know he's an android questioning weather he has free will or only acts the way he does because he's programmed to. Like all stories by Dick, it's a head trip. The arts pretty good and David Mack writes the story well.

RASL #7 - As good as the other issues of RASL, but the book comes out so rarely that it's hard to keep track of what's going on. I'll need to reread the series in one sitting in the future.

Gunnerkrigg Court HC vol. 02 - Volume 2 of Siddell's online comic. I love the first volume and this continues the high quality work. The art is more polished right off the bat. Compared to the first volume, there's less variety in the stories, sticking to following Annie and her dealings with the court and the creatures in the forest. Since everyone has already been introduced, Siddell is allowed to flesh out the characters more and fill in back stories, which he balances well with telling the story of the present.

Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. Ultimate TPB - Fun. No other way to describe this book. Tons of action. Tons of comedy. Great pacing. Fun.

On a related note, Batman Returns is awesome. Very visually pleasing, the actors look like they're having fun, and Walken chews up and spits out scenery like nobody's business.
