I was talking with a Muslim once, who said that he believed that God created sins to tempt us. I said I disagreed, and used the example of gluttony as a case where something is indeed very good (food), but when used to excess is bad (gluttony). I understand the atheist viewpoint, however, as a Catholic, I disagree.

Wrath: It is okay to be angry. Even God became angry. Feeling anger is not the sin, acting on it is.

Envy: Wanting to have what others have is natural, normal, and human nature. Envy is another thing altogether. It is wanting to have what others have without putting forth the effort or without concern for the consequences.

Lust is referring to sex outside of marriage, which is not necessary for the continuation of humanity.

Sloth refers to refusal to work regardless of need to work. Sloth often leads to "shortcuts" to wealth such as stealing, murder, etc.

Gluttony refers to doing anything to excess, not just eating. It is an attitude toward life. One can be a glutton as a collector of art or antiques or anything one must "have all of."

Greed is putting aside everything important for the sake of fulfilling one's desires, no matter the consequences. See "Gluttony" above.

Pride refers to arrogance. One may be proud of one's accomplishments, as long as that pride is tempered with humility and the accomplishments are credited to God.

All in all, the point of the seven deadly sins is to remind us to remain humble, steadfast in our goals, and true to our family and faith in God.
