PARIS, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The French Senate has passed a bill to forbid pupils under the age of 14 from using cell phones at school amid concerns from parents and health institutes, the daily Le Figaro reported Thursday.
The Senate unanimously agreed Wednesday to ban cell phones in classes and on campus for students under 14 years old.

Environmental institutes and parents have said that cell phones have risks to some childrens' health and development, said Chantal Jouanno, the Secretary of State for Ecology.

A recent survey showed that more than 70 percent of French youths own a cell phone and 47 percent of students aged between 12and 17 use them during classes.

The bill still has to be approved by the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament.
