Missive from the Underworld

It's almost the end of January, which is an entirely more comfortable thing to say this year than last. The weather has been much milder, and while much of the country may not agree, I'm generally happier when it rains. I'm pretty sure piccies will come, although neither of us are obsessive about taking photos (possibly because we look so bad in most of the ones that actually feature us). It's safe to say that it looks like a lot of other places we've lived in.

Luckily we were all a very long way from floods (except maybe the small ones in Tassie in Tooticky's and my case). But we have friends dealing with flood and cyclone related issues as I type. It's been a change from bush fires, but still as much fun as ever. Australia's climate and weather aren't exactly what you'd call boring.

The new house is a couple of kilometres from the Derwent (big river the flows through Hobart) fortunately, although it's not that big a vertical rise. I've already sorted out house insurance and made sure I understand the flood and storm clauses of the policy. I think lots of Australians are doing similar things at the moment. The lack of insurance, under-insurance, or tricky aspects of various clauses are getting a fair amount of media attention, although it's always been a phenomenon discussed in more specialised emergency management publications.

The degree? *shrug* As I discussed with my lecturer when handing the final piece in, I'm a little over academic essays.
