You know, I don't write in this thing nearly as much as I should. Reading back, I'm reminded that I actually like a lot of my writing, rather than cringing away from it. It also occurs that I should write about more than just SF&F Conventions, but since I'm about to just that again, such thoughts can join the ranks of other New Year's Day idiocies

Other people pick which sessions to go to based on who is listing as presenting or being on the panel.
I do this - it's not so much about seeing the BNAs as that there are some people (some fans, some BNAs, some writers/editors/etc who are probably not all that BN) who are interesting enough that any panel they're on will be worthwhile regardless of topic.
Conversely - I've been burned/bored enough times that if a topic interests me but I don't recognize any of the panellists - I may still go but I'll sit near the back where I can leave unobtrusively if it sucks.
I may have also surprised the odd BNA by exhibiting a lack of said squeeing on meeting them
As a firm believer in the notion that BNAs are also people, I'm sure it was either refreshing and/or unnoticeable (unless of course you were deliberately rude and snubbing in your non-squeeing but that sounds unlikely). I squee (and worse, because I'm fairly shy when interacting with new people, so the whole "make real conversation" is difficult) but I limit my squeeing to politely appropriate spaces such as when getting an autograph or some such.
