Briefing

Sep 16, 2007 23:33

Captain Henriksen and Commander Sevel walked into the conference room, and saw everyone who was presently seated.

"Good evening," the Captain says. "I will get right to the point. We have been ordered to divert to Delta Crux III by Starfleet Command. We will rendezvous with the USS Alamo and the USS Monitor at the midway point of Sigma Octanis. From there we will meet at the Delta Crux XI. The Alamo and Monitor will remain at a set of coordinates near the eleventh planet, while Takeda Shingen will proceed to Delta Crux III. "

Lieutenant Commander Therav th'Shan's antennae perked on hearing some part of that statement.

"Commander Sevel?" Henriksen said, turning to the Vulcan XO.

Sevel nodded. This time, she looked more severe than usual - her hair was tightly pulled into a knot at the back of her head.

"In 2374, unbeknownst to most, a major power and the United Federation of Planets agreed to an unprecedented exchange of scientific knowledge with the goal of the defeat of the Dominion. We loaned them the warp-field scientist Dr. Agnieszka Kowalski.
In exchange, we received the weapons scientist Dr. S'Tev tr'Avrak.

Such a thing had never been attempted before, and would never have been attempted. But in the face of a threat bigger than the both of us,  and the certainty that this threat would strike at the heart of both of our nations, this action was perhaps the ultimate good faith gesture.

We received our scientist, in good health.

Dr. tr'Avrak was killed in the conflict.

Or so it was believed.

Recent intelligence places him on the world of Delta Crux III, a major black market hub in historically disputed territory between the Cardassians, Romulans and the Federation.

He has been kidnapped by a faction on that world, and held for ransom. The Romulan Star Empire still acknowledges him as 'dead' and will not risk extracting him.

Dr. tr'Avrak has knowledge that could place our hard-won peace in danger if it is available to the highest bidder.

We must not allow this to happen."

Commander Sevel took a deep breath, and scanned the eyes of all present.

"I have selected those of you who are here because of the skills and assets that each of you brings to this table.

Lieutenant Commander Neera - as Chief Medical Officer, you will select one medic to accompany the away team.

Lieutenant Commander th'Shan - you will be responsible for finding out whatever you can about what we are going into. You will remain here on the Shingen. You will be the tactical coordinator for this mission, and the mission liason. You will find out exactly what we are up against. What they are likely to be armed with. What we need to do, and know. You will be responsible for procuring maps, intelligence, and any other data. You will provide Lieutenant Commander Indra with all of the information he needs. Finally, in your role as Mission Liason, the Away Team will report to you."

For a moment, the Andorian's antennae went flat against his scalp.

"Your years of service on the USS Monitor during the Dominion War prove you can do this job. I do not expect to be disappointed," she told him.

She continued.

"Lieutenant Commander Indra - you will select an operations engineer to accompany the Away Team. Preferably someone who is an original thinker and problem solver.

Lieutenant Kinnara - you will be the leader of this Away Team. You will go downworld with two security officers of your choosing. You will report to Lt. Cdr. th'Shan.

Finally. Lieutenant Diziara."

The First Officer's mouth twitched slightly... did the Vulcan almost smile?

"I need hardly explain why you will be on the Away Team. You will pilot the Trafalgar and... do whatever else is necessary."

Commander Sevel stood for a moment, with her hands folded behind her back. She nodded.

Captain Henriksen smiled her professional smile... that concealed grave concern.

"We will rendezvous with Monitor and Alamo in two days. I know that I am not asking the impossible," she said.
