CONCLUSION.
Kelly was the easiest one to pick off, they had decided, and she was the first to go. Had already been taken care of before daybreak, and then it was Twiggy and Jemz that were left, by themselves. With the bit of light just peaking over the horizon, and they were frozen in place, wondering where the other two had gone. Where everyone had gone, and why it was suddenly so quiet, why there was suddenly nothing left, nobody left, and they were the only two. They were the only two who had survived, up until this point, and there was nothing left for them to do except wait to die. Because they knew better, knew they hadn't won, and the gates were still locked, and the town was still dark, and they had always known. Had known from the very beginning that they were never, ever leaving.
Never getting out alive. Never getting out still breathing, still in one piece. They hadn't stood a chance.
And they hadn't bothered to run, either, much to Mordecai's disappointment. He found their remains hours later, when the sun was high in the sky, and he was nudging every bit and piece of bone aside with the toe of his shoe. They hadn't left much -- little shreds of skin, flesh, here and there, little bits of hair, but that was it. Most of it was just bone, ivory and smooth and sharp, and he sighed. They hadn't been much of a challenge. Hadn't been too hard to get rid of. Hadn't been what he had expected them to be, and it was a bit of a shame that he hadn't had the chance to fuck around with them as much as he normally would have. The wolves had gotten to the final three before he had that chance, and how disappointing. How disappointing.
The tip of his cigarette flared in the midday sun as he brought it to his lips, inhaled, and turned. Yes. They had been disappointing.
But the next ones.
He'd see to it that they weren't.
