FOURTH NIGHT.

The temperature around her was dropping, every second, every moment the air was forced from her lungs, and she could only tilt her head, tilt her chin, down in toward her chest, bringing up her arms to fold them securely about her stomach. She had thought it was a dream, when she awoke in his arms, against his chest, as he carried her from the group of people sleeping in the distance, near the makeshift fire in the middle of the streets. But she hadn't protested, and she hadn't struggled, and her head fallen against his shoulder as those eyes slid shut again. His fingers had been working their way through her hair, gentle and soothing, and she didn't understand any of it. Knew that he was leading her to her, death, yes, but it was so much better, so much nicer, not to struggle.

His thumb had trailed its way along her chin, down the side of her neck, when he glanced to her after stopping. And then there was a pause, and in her moments of semi-consciousness, of barely being awake, she registered the sound of a handle being turned and of a door being opened. Then he was moving again, but only for a second or two, before he was shifting his weight and had her down onto the ground. Cool metal met her back, and the only thing she noticed, the only thing she could tell from behind closed eyes, was that the room she was in was extremely bright and extremely cold.

A freezer. Of course. Why did it all make perfect sense?

"Gen." He was warm, warmer than he should have been, when he knelt in front of her, one gloved hand moving to place itself delicately at the top of her thigh. "Look at me."

He didn't have to tell her twice. Those eyes opened, just barely, and she stared at him silently as her body (for whatever reason, it felt so heavy, so tired) refused to move.

"You did something. You drugged me. You--"

"It's best you go silently for this one." His hand moved down, squeezed lightly at the spot between her knee and her thigh, before he was pulling away. "A much lovelier sort of death. You understand."

He was gone, seconds later, and the door (large, metal, quite heavy) shut behind him, silently. The light overhead flickered, and she caught those familiar eyes in the window of the room before her head went back and met the cool of the wall behind her. It all made sense. All of it. Why did it all make so much sense?

And then there was a small smile tugging at her lips as the light dimmed, as the light failed, went out, and then dark.
