It isn't like he didn't spend any time with them. Of course he would do fun stuff with Adam. That is generally the way it works with non-custodial parents: when they show up, they take the kids to do fun stuff. They don't do the actual parenting stuff, just the fun stuff.
Honestly, I got really pissed off at the show for retconning John into an even worse father than he was in the early seasons. In the early seasons he was a flawed father who ultimately loved his children and protected them. Yes, he taught them to fight and was away a lot, but it wasn't until the later seasons where we are told that well, actually, John was never really there and Dean raised Sam.
#555 re-inforced what a horrid father John was in my mind. My problem with this photo, concerning that particular episode, was in knowing that somewhere, his boys were left alone, while he sat there and played house for a day. John's character makes me have to ...remember it's fiction, and to not be so weird about it.
#551 I think I was more surprised to see he hadn't turned the darn thing into a shiv.
599-- Yes please, loose the shirt. Especially if he has to make the porny face. 555-- This episode made my hatred complete. So they have to rub it in our faces that he did know how to be a decent, if largely absent, father. Where were Dean and Sam's baseball games? Huh, huh!! Bastard. 553-- I thought he looked goofy. But that judgement is made with him standing next to Sam and Dean, sooo. 551-- Secretly Sam loved the pink toothbrush. Cause Dean took the time to try to bug him.
