So I'm trying to get the diet started back up... seriously thinking of just going to the book shop, picking a diet at random and enslaving myself to it. I've hated it in the past and it's never gone well but I'm thinking now I'm older, wiser, and more to the point far more desperate that maybe it'll motivate me...

Anyway, saw this, figured might be helpful, so posting

As children, we learnt our alphabet and our numbers and these lessons have been vital for us throughout life. But we all have another important lesson to learn that will be just as vital for our health and well-being.

And this lesson is simple - in fact, it’s as simple as ABC! We’re not talking about the alphabet, but the basics for living a healthy life.

"A" Always believe in your ability to succeed. This is important to success because if you do not believe that you can and will succeed in reaching your objectives, why would you try? We give up and fail to reach our goals because we predispose ourselves to fail.

We think negative thoughts such as, “The last diet didn't work, so this one won't either". Or we listen to others tease us for "going on yet another diet.” Put those thoughts and others like them out of your mind. From today forward, believe in YOU. Believe in your ability to take control over your situation and to improve every aspect of you life.

"B" Be prepared. Many people start out with every good intention but because of time, convenience or other lifestyle factors, aren’t able to live up to their objectives. You know your lifestyle better than anyone. We cannot tell you what will work for you in each situation, but you can! If you routinely are pressed for time, prepare for this. Being prepared means packing food from home before leaving for the day, having quick and easy meals ready in the freezer or being confident that you can make a smart choice in the supermarket or take-away. Either way, do what you can to ensure that healthy food will be readily available to you when you are hungry.

"C" Care for yourself. Write down 10 adjectives right now that you would use to describe yourself, or just think of them in your mind. What words do you select that best describe you? Are they positive words that signal a strong sense of self? Are they words that reflect who you are? Are the words that you chose negative and self-deprecating? Do the words focus more on the condition of your body than your personality and soul?

Think carefully about the words that you selected. No one else can read them and no one else can hear your thoughts. Read them over. How do they make you feel? If your words are positive in nature, good for you! You will have a much quicker start on this journey. If your words are negative, ask yourself if you would ever use these words to describe a loved one or a best friend. If the answer is no, then you need to stop using them to describe YOU, the most important person in your life.

Now that you have brushed up your ABC's, let's get to the 123's! To jumpstart your journey to a healthier and happier you, all you need to do are three easy steps.

1. Identify the worst thing you routinely do that is hindering your weight loss. Do you constantly have a full fat cappuccino beside you at work? Do you munch on crisps or chocolate while you’re watching TV in the evening? Do you drink regular soft drinks every day? Identify what you know is your worst habit and go about breaking it. Replace it with something positive. Are you a nibbler by nature? No problem. Nibble, but switch the unhealthy snack that you have previously chosen with something better for you, such as carrots, grapes or raisins. Change that full fat cappuccino for a ‘tall and skinny’ or switch to diet soft drinks. Small steps can lead to big changes!

2. Work your body! Right now you may very well feel like the rusty, squeaky and hard-to-move Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz. It may have been so long since you actually used your muscles that they now feel like they won't move. But move they will! With a little bit of oil (or water, in our case) and a little bit of movement, they will respond and soon they will be as good as new and maybe even better than ever before!

Even if you have been overweight your entire life and have NEVER been in shape, you can change! You can lose weight and you can get your muscles toned and tightened. You can get the body that you have always dreamed of. All you need to realise is that dreaming and wishing won't produce results. Work your body and it will work for you!

3. Attitude is everything. If you mope around and feel sorry for yourself thinking that life will be a series of denials and deprivation because you are ‘on a diet’, then you have already lost the battle. If you embrace change and believe that all the years that you indulged in unhealthy foods, didn't exercise and lived in a body that you didn't like, you were being denied and deprived of all that life has to offer, then you are on the road to change! Living life in a healthy manner is NOT deprivation - it is abundance! When you can keep up with your kids, run for the bus without being puffed or dance even when people may see you, this is the stuff that life is made of!

What is holding you back from realising your dreams and goals? What is there in life that you want to do and have not been allowing yourself to do? Attitude is everything!
