This can’t be happening…. No…she had to be stuck in a dream…no…a Nightmare…there was no way that she; Rachel Berry had failed at something. She was supposed to be the BEST after all that’s what her two gay dads instilled in her…ok so not literally but still. She’d been winning pageants and competitions since she was months old, she’d been in a plethora of clubs at this so called excuse of an educational institution (and in most of them she held office) she was dating the newly reinstated Quarterback of the football team and she was an honor student…emphasis on the WAS.
Raising her hand as she looked at the offending letter scrawled in red on the paper that sat on her desk she waited for the teacher to call on her.
“Yes Miss Berry,” Mr. Anderson, their language arts teacher spoke.
“I think you made a mistake in grading my paper,” she declared.
“No, I didn’t.”
Standing up in grand dramatic fashion she sauntered over to the balding mans desk and slammed the paper down.
“But you gave me a C.”
“Actually that’s a C-,” he began, “for starters don’t write yourself as the protagonist.”
She wanted to argue the fact that her heroine ‘Barbara Cherry was a blonde however the teacher spoke up breaking her chain of thought.
“Miss Cohen Chang,” he said as Tina sat up in her seat, “you’ve been blowing me away consistently with your assignments and seeing as how both you and Miss Berry are in glee club together I’m sure you wouldn’t mind in helping her out.”
Tina just smiled, nodding to accept the offer as the teacher announced that the rest of the period would be dedicated to working on projects.
‘Oh joy’ Tina thought to herself. Sure she had nothing against Rachel per-say just that she preferred the diva in moderation.
“I really don’t need your help but I appreciate the offer,” Rachel said as she took a seat in an empty desk that had sat beside Tina.
“Listen Rachel, I didn’t ‘offer’ to help you with your writing Mr. Anderson suggested I help you remember? It was all of five seconds ago.”
Rachel just nodded.
“Can I see your paper.”
Rachel nodded handing her glee-mate the paper that still was clutched in her hand.
“Mr. Anderson just has it out for me…. You’ll see.”
Tina nodded taking the paper from Rachel’s hand.
“I’ll be the judge of that,” Tina said as her eyes glided across the paper.
It was interesting to say the least. The story was about ‘Barbara Cherry, a bubbly blonde (who just so happened to have two gay dads) that overcame all odds and get with the most popular guy in school.
“So,” Rachel said, “what do you think?”
“Well…..” Tina said. The tone of her voice instantly alerted Rachel to the fact something was wrong, “Mr. Anderson was right… your protagonist is pretty much just a blonde, less neurotic version of you.”
“I’m not neurotic.”
Rachel rolled her eyes.
“Here,” Tina said, “Look at my latest piece.”
Rachel began to read Tina’s piece, which wasn’t at all what she suspected. Ok, so it did have some dark undertones but on the surface it was a love story…tragic…but a love story nonetheless.
“Think of creative writing as creating the lyrics to an awesome story song.”
Rachel just laughed.
“you didn’t just say that.”
Tina shrugged as the bell rang.
“So, do you want to meet up and work on this paper some more now?” Tina asked as Rachel shook her head saying she worked better alone and that she’d have something for her ‘partner’ the following morning.

True to her word Rachel walked up to her the following day as she was sitting on the steps of the school waiting for Mike when Rachel approached.
“Finished,” she said with a grin as she placed the paper in Tina’s hand.
A few seconds later Tina looked up from the paper smiled.
“This is good…this is real good.”
“So you think this is A + material?”
“Truthfully.”
Rachel nodded.
“Well…” Tina said as she picked up a pen and began to edit Rachel’s paper.
“Make these changes and it’ll be a solid A at least.”
Rachel smiled thanking Tina again as she headed into class to make the edits before class that day.

The air in Mr. Anderson’s classroom seemed to come to a standstill as the teacher announced that he was pleasantly pleased with the improvements of work for those that had room to improve.
As he said this he handed Tina her paper.
Rachel was sure she’d gotten another A+ and judging from the smile on Tina’s lips she was correct in the assumption . it was then that their teacher placed her paper facedown on her desk. This was it, the moment of truth. Her life and her GPA and her career as she knew it was all depending on the little letter in the right hand corner. Ok so not her career she was being a tad melodramatic but still….
“3-2-1,” she whispered to herself as she flipped the paper over to see an A scrawled in red ink along with a note, ‘great improvement’.”
She turned to look at Tina who silently smiled to her as the teacher began his lesson for the day.
As the bell rang Rachel approached Tina.
“I don’t’ say this often enough to other people but thank you,” Rachel said.
“Your welcome.”
“Anyway next time Mr. Schue offers you a solo I won’t fight to snag it from you.”
“I’m going to keep you to that,” Tina said smiling as they exited the classroom together.
The End
