Affiliation: Trainer

Personality:

Vulcan Raven was born in his Inuit village and raised as a shaman due to the tattoo-like birthmarks that covered his body. He developed a strong connection with the spiritual world and was gifted with significant intuition, which leads him to predict events with a startling degree of accuracy. Whether he can do this because of his spiritual abilities orbecause of his keen knowledge of human nature and predictability is unknown.

"He's not just strong, Snake. He's a graduate emeritus from Alaska University, so he's a quick thinker, too."

Raven is a well-read individual, holding knowledge of many ancient rituals, beliefs, and mythos. He has a great respect for learned individuals, even when they misinterpret his cryptic speech. He's intelligent and clever, yet other people often disregard what he says because he holds to the belief that most problems can be solved with very simple means; i.e. shooting them until they stop being problems. His physical size and strength also serve as a reason for people to dismiss his intelligence.

After graduating from college, the shaman lived for several years in his village. It was during those years that he participated in the Eskimo-Indian Olympics and won some notable fame for his spiritual and physical strength. It was also during this time that Raven first met Revolver Ocelot during a deer-trapping expedition. He felt his fate lay with the man, who was then a GRU operative, and joined the Soviet special forces unit Vympel. He was loyal for years until he felt he was betrayed when the Soviet Union fell and he was demoted after Boris Yelstin's coup in 1993. He has a general dislike of Russians due to this, but recognizes his prejudice as an unfitting weakness. Raven soon joined Outer Heaven until its fall in 1995.

Ocelot once again steps into Raven's life, recommending that he join FOXHOUND. Again, the spirits told him that his fate was again at hand, and he became the unit's heavy weapons/explosive ordnance specialist. During the following years with the elite group, Raven began using a portable modification of the M61 Vulcan cannon, from which he took his codename.

Raven participated in the Shadow Moses Incident in part because of his loyalty to his FOXHOUND group and because he knew he would meet his end in a glorious battle against Solid Snake. As a warrior, he had been driven his entire life to test himself, to push his body, mind, and spirit to the furthest extent. When the raven on his head crooned to him that his final test had come, Raven welcomed it with joyous arms.

Despite his defeat, Raven passed that test. His faith was strong and his life had been lived fully - there were no regrets when he became one with the ravens of Shadow Moses.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

As stated, Raven is a big man with strong spiritual abilities who speaks primarily in metaphors. He does this partially out of habit, for hidden meanings are in all things, and to amuse himself by watching people try to understand what he has said. Raven enjoys a good fight, has many talents, and is generally an easy-going individual. He is slow to anger, but when one prods the sleeping polar bear, one must accept an irritated mauling.

What weaknesses he has are usually the result of being a veritable giant among men. Clothes - especially shirts - made for other people simply will not fit him. He towers intimidatingly over most people at 210 cm, sometimes causing them to react badly. Raven must be extra careful in shops and narrow areas, and his strength may slip him mind at times when dealing with normal, squish-able humans. Raven also is a man of few words, preferring to help people to think rather than giving them straight answers.

Pokemon
Starter: A female Miltank fondly nicknamed Atka, an Inuit word for Guardian Spirit. Atka is very much like her trainer, who will dote on her due to an unfortunate weakness to things small and cute. (A miltank would be small to Raven) She travels with him outside her pokeball, for neither of them care for confinement, and he speaks to her as an equal. Whether she answers back in a way he understands is again up for debate.

First Person Sample:

Hmm...[The video feed flickers to life, showing a close up of what could be some kind of bird tattoo. The angle shifts and soon one can see that the tattoo is on the forehead of a very, very big man.]

Greetings, fellow spirits. I have journeyed many long roads to rest with my ancestors. Unfortunately...[The camera turns and a mellow-looking miltank is shown. The deep voiced man continues] Unfortunately, my Atka is behaving strangely. I have never encountered a guardian spirit quite so...pink...before now.

If any of my ancestors or my comrade-in-arms who have gone before me are listening, I would request guidance on what is expected of me now that I am dead.

Third Person Sample:

[From what Raven had gathered, this world had been created by tricky spirits to serve as a kind of proving ground for those who wish either to return to their worlds or to continue to their proper places in the afterlife. Each chosen warrior who is plucked from time and space must partner with a kindred spirit of some kind, a "pokemon", and then must explore the area together until the warrior has proven his or herself in some way.]

[The shaman has meditated for many long nights over these unusual circumstances, seeking to reconnect himself with the unfamiliar earth. He was pleased to find that this world spoke to him as easily as the one he had just left. Raven listened to the wordless messages, feeling as if reuniting with a dear friend who just happened to have developed a strange accent at some point.]

[The miltank, the pokemon the spirits had chosen for him, stirred near his feet, catching his attention. Atka was a very gentle seeming creature, but Raven could see the strength in her frame and the clever intelligence in her eyes.]

[Perhaps it was unusual for a man such as himself to be pleased with a guardian spirit who was so very cute and pink, but he instinctively knew that they would make a formidable team. While Raven knew his own strength well, he also understood the value of teamwork. This new "tank" of his would be cherished as a beloved friend sent to him by his ancestors.]

[Raven bends down to scratch around Atka's stubby horns, waking her from her sleep. Gravely, he addresses her respectfully.]

The caribou must journey still, Atka. You and I have much ground to cover before we rest again. There are comrades who await us; we must not dawdle.

[The pink creature rises obediently, then squeaks as she yawns. Raven goes very still and looks around carefully.]

[There is no other soul near their camp.]

[The huge man hugs the sleepy beast, cuddling it for a moment before regaining his composure and standing.]

Ahem...Yes. Let us go, Atka.
