The Departed is the best Boston mafia movie since Boondock Saints. It has one glaring problem. Mr Scorcese, there is not that much Boston accent in all of Boston. Much less in all of Southie, where the movie takes place. The movie is brilliant, no doubt. It should win many awards, all richly deserved. Nonetheless, the attempted Boston accents were terrible. The actors laid this aural offense on thick, and it will be rough to the ear of anyone who has actually lived there.
Killeen, Texas is a dump. I hate the place, and I hope to never, ever see it again. Austin is okay. Too humid for my tastes. Saw a great show there with my uncle and his family. Don Byron, David Gilmore (of Berklee College of Music) and Chris Thomas King performing some of Junior Walker's catalogue. David Gilmore ---> Guitar God.
Went out for dinner my last night there with my old battalion commander. We had some Korean barbeque, talked about our time in Iraq, and our futures. When he spotted me at the Fort Hood minimall, and was very insistent that I call him and we get dinner one night - that really meant alot to me. That, more than any words, tells how much he cares for the people in his command, even former commands. He is a great officer, a man to respect, not some cake-eater.
The Grudge 2 scared the crap out of me. I'm still freaked out by this movie. Sam Raimi has come a long way from directing Evil Dead.
So that's a highlight of the last few weeks for me. Now I'm just chilling in the Springs, technically sorta almost under the unit's rear detachment (Rear D) until I can get my life straight enough to deploy. Should be here for a few weeks.
So that's all the writing I can stomach for now, except to say that I just got a ticket to Trivium's show next Friday.
