Whoa, so apparently the last time I posted anything here was months ago. In my defense several things happened to prevent me from getting internet. The first among those being my father who decided the solution to his own wifi woes was to reset the router--nothing has been the same since.

For me. His wifi connection is just fine. They are very happy together (or so said the latest postcard.)

Then--because the winter holiday season is endless--there was work.

If there's one thing I've learned since I started working retail, it's that you don't have the luxury to avoid holidays even the pesky ones you'd rather find a cave and board up never to see again.

I remember liking holidays. In some of the places I lived, things like Christmas were a far off concept that meant that your relatives sent you presents months ahead of time just to be sure they made it to your remote location by the 25th. We had a fake tree packed in boxes that got flatter every year and had to get converter plugs for the lights. When Christmas came, we got things in packages that we'd never have been able to get where we lived.

Now, of course, I am smothered by Christmas with jingles piped in at all hours and red and green decorations stalking the street corners. Everywhere I go, there it is.

Which isn't to say that it's all terrible but it is exhausting. People get worked up about the holidays. It's like a second job with deadlines and a budget. A lot of people come in cranky and harried and share the wealth of stress and irritation with those of us already doomed not to have a real holiday. So, it's not the same anymore.

When I was younger I looked forward to big boxes and candy, now I look forward to quite time with the family I barely have time to see. We don't really give each other gifts anymore and we don't go in for big meals. We turn off the radio and the television to avoid the music and frenzied celebration and, instead, catch up on the things we've missed while we were busy doing other things.

In other news, I'm 10k into an Inception AU--and let me clarify that this is 10k of silliness that promises to be longer and more silly. While I have it on fairly good authority that it's funny, we'll have to see how well I maintain this sustained comedy routine--partially because it is winter now and I tend to get maudlin during the winter and partially because I'm only 10k and there is a lot of plot.

At least now I have a mostly reliable internet connection, so perhaps I'll be around more? I miss everybody. D:
