I think it's because so many people identify themselves as being Christian because it's their culture, yet they don't regularly go to church. I was like that for so many years until just recently.
See, but even then I find it sad, because regardless of beliefs the Bible is an important document for the sake of cultural literacy in the entire Western World.
I totally agree. Aside from its cultural impact, the prose and poetry are just beautiful, especially in the King James Version. While a person may not agree with the message, there's no denying the beauty of the expression.
And I identified as Roman Catholic for many years despite being pretty ignorant about my religion. Then I was agnostic for awhile and then I realized that, hey, I just don't dig this whole god thing anymore.
I personally think the book of Revelations is an excellent read, though.
I wanna see some of these statistics applied STRICTLY to atheists or other non-Christians. I took a test in middle school which asked a few questions regarding the Bible and it made me think "What if I was Taoist? Raised in a family completely of that religion? Why in the world would I need to know something about the Bible then?"
My personal experience has actually been that atheists, at least, are fairly well-versed in the Bible. After all, once you read what it *actually* says, you start to realize that it doesn't make any sense...
I really must sit down and read the Bible one day. I've read LOTS of pieces of it when I was religious, but never got the chance to finish. Must get a copy of the Koran and a copy other religious books, too.
Then again ... I already have thirty plus books that I need to read and those are just the ones in my possession, not the ones that I intend to read, but don't own yet like "Y, the Last Man".
