tv tropes Personality: At a first glance, Tsugumi comes across as a very aloof, unwelcoming woman. She’s initially very unwilling to talk to others, often trying to keep to herself and answering only with short, clipped responses. She’s also unafraid to speak her opinion, even if it’s unpopular or just plain rude; when Takeshi, trying to make conversation, asks if his friends ditching him could be considered rude, she replies that she doesn’t really care about him because they just met. In fact, as time goes on, Tsugumi really comes across as somewhat bitchy. She and Takeshi often get at each other’s throats, sometimes for petty reasons, and she finds a lot of his and the other’s actions to be downright idiotic.
However, her cold personality is simply her way of protecting herself. As a child, Tsugumi’s life was fairly normal up until she was infected with the Cure virus at the age of 12. She was then later hit by a semi-trailer, and she miraculously survived despite many broken bones and massive blood loss. Her strange recovery prompted Leiblich researchers to take her and study her in their research facility. Her time there was painful; she cannot remember the number of times she was injured or nearly killed, and it took her friendship with Chami the rat to make her realize that she was kept like a rat in a cage. It makes sense that she went from being a cheery, sweet girl to a withdrawn, harsh woman; she was never given kindness.
And yet, for all that she tries to come across as a bitch, Tsugumi is not completely selfish, not even during the events at LeMU. She saves Takeshi’s life only a few moments into the game (claiming that he would be in the way if he tripped), and she also risks her own life to prevent Coco from being injured. While she wants to die because she’s tired of living and being hurt, she doesn’t want anyone else to die during the accident; something Takeshi points out when she tries to claim that she doesn’t care about them.
And, eventually, Tsugumi winds up opening up and learning to trust others. She originally shares her backstory with Takeshi to show him that not everything’s as “black and white” as he believes it to be, but she also receives understanding and acceptance from him. He listens to the story of her traumatic past and she shares her scars with him, revealing her body but also her vulnerabilities. They make love, but it’s not just physical for her; she truly does love him, and he brings out that more open and friendly childlike side of her. He is able to get past those boundaries she throws up for self-preservation. When he expresses that she’s his most important person, she is thrilled. When he dies for her, though, she is understandably heartbroken; she only continues living because he asks it of her…and also for their children.
By the second LeMU incident, Tsugumi has withdrawn again, becoming even more unwilling to associate with the others. She is very suspicious and angry this time around, for good reason-she clearly recognizes the signs that the incident is a repeat of the one 17 years ago, and the fact that someone is impersonating Takeshi only makes things worse. Even her very atmosphere is described as filled with animosity; when the Kid attempts to approach her upon their first meeting, a single glare is enough to freeze him in place. She does eventually thaw out a bit when she realizes that the whole point of the second LeMU incident is to save Takeshi (and Coco), and she explains to Hokuto that she is going along with it through her jewel chocolate metaphor.
In the end, however, there is one constant. There is nothing more important to Tsugumi than her family. Nothing. She may be slow to trust, but she is fiercely loyal. She only comes to LeMU the second time to reunite with her children, whom she gave up because she thought it would give them a better life. Even as she wanted to see them again, she doesn’t reveal her identity to them because she doesn’t believe herself worthy of being their mother; she abandoned them (albeit for their sake), so she isn’t their real mother, only their biological one. But she does seek their happiness and try to protect them where she can, and she loves Takeshi with all that she is. His apparent death saddened her greatly, and getting him back was the happiest day of her life.
So, now that her family's together....Tsugumi's happy. Not skipping-through-fields-of-flowers happy, but not frowning 24/7. She's still not a very social person, and she's still more likely than not to be kind of snarky and distrusting, but she doesn't want to die any more. Her relationship with Takeshi still has its ups and downs (she spends half of the ending swearing and throwing things at him), but she believes in him.
Around others, though, she'll be her usual reserved self. Change doesn't happen overnight, after all.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
strengths;
♠ As the sole carrier of the complete Cure virus, Tsugumi’s entire genetic code has been rewritten; not only is she effectively immortal (barring drowning or another unavoidable death) because she has stopped aging past the point of 17, but she can also survive severe injuries and is not susceptible to most, if not all, diseases (such as Tief Blau).
♠ As per another side effect of Cure, Tsugumi is also unnaturally strong; her body has been enhanced to a superhuman level. When she helps Takeshi avoid drowning toward the beginning of the game, he notes that being pulled by her felt like he was being driven in a car-they were moving that fast.
♠ Tsugumi is more than capable of taking care of herself; she has done so under adverse circumstances for many years, after all.
♠ Tsugumi is indeed intelligent; she has a vast knowledge of theoretical concepts and science, such as Archimedes’s principle, and she is able to figure out the purpose of the second LeMU incident.
♠ Tsugumi is very loyal to those who manage to get past her shell; she would never harm Chami, Takeshi, Sara, or Hokuto without very good reason, if at all.
weaknesses;
✖ While providing physical strengths, Cure is also somewhat of a weakness for Tsugumi; it’s what makes her different from everyone else, and what attracted Leiblich into kidnapping and experimenting on her for years. It also means that she will never age past 17, and she cannot kill herself using conventional methods.
✖ In a sense, her family also provides a weakness; put them in danger, and she will risk it all to save them. She also risks being left behind in LeMU forever the first time around when she leaves to find Chami, her pet, because he's like family to her.
✖ Tsugumi is, again, incredibly slow to trust, which can be a hindrance in such emergency situations because she’s not willing to work together with others. Her loner tendencies often get her into trouble.
✖ She's spent her whole life (since childhood) either trapped or on the run, so she doesn't know too much about a 'normal' life.
✖ She is really sensitive to UV light; she often wears a tanuki (raccoon) suit in order to avoid sunlight exposure.

First Person Sample: …Tch.
[ There’s a seventeen-year-old girl on the screen, inspecting the camera before giving it an unimpressed look. By her side is a Rattata. ]
This is stupid. Who would think of something like this.... [ Scowl at the Rattata. This game was from when she was a kid, guys. Come on. Not funny.
But then her face settles into a neutral, almost calm expression. ] ...It doesn't matter.
[ A breath. ]
None of this matters.
[ And with that, she turns off the feed and throws the 'Gear back into her backpack, uncaring if it gets lost. ]
Third Person Sample: The first fear she had upon waking was that everything from the second LeMU incident had been a dream.
Certainly, she couldn't hear or spot Takeshi or the kids anywhere--and this definitely wasn't the boat they'd all been riding back to shore. It was enough to make her panic, tearing through the house for any sign of her family. Her family. She wasn't willing to let that brief period of happiness of finally, finally being reunited fade into just a dream. It had to be real.
It just had to.
Trying desperately to calm down and think rationally through the panic, it occurred to her that perhaps her assumptions were wrong. This certainly was no place she'd been before, so it didn't make sense for her to be here, even assuming that 2034 had been uneventful. Yes. That had to be it. This was some strange dream, put together by her weary subconscious, and everything would be fine when she woke up.
...Well. Either that, or this was some secondary plot You’haru and Kaburaki had put together. Somehow, she didn’t put it past them. Not that she saw the purpose of kidnapping her once Takeshi and Coco had been saved, but they’d done a similar deception once before. Even if it was for a good cause, it still left her room for doubt.
Well, either way, sitting around here doing nothing wouldn’t get anything done. Tsugumi had always been a person of action, of running; it was what she knew, when she was unsure of everything else.
Ignoring her "mother" with a scowl, she left the house, backpack slung haphazardly over her shoulder. There was a path leading out of town, and, not even bothering to check where it led, she set out determinedly along her path.
Perhaps it was hot-headed and almost Takeshi-like of her (had he really rubbed off on her that much?), but the way she figured it, she had nothing to lose. Either she’d wake up, or she’d (hopefully) be a step closer to finding the truth….and the way home.
