Personality:
It’s probably important to know that Yosuke isn’t the most popular guy at Yasoinaba High. He’s the son of a family who brought progress to the small town in the form of a large superstore called Junes; the shopkeepers at the shopping district hate him because of what he stands for, and he never really was able to fit in just right since moving from the city. He’s clumsy and awkward despite his best attempts, and really doesn’t have mastery over the art of tact in most conversations. He has a thing for girls (like most high school boys), but most girls don’t really have a thing for him. His senpai, Saki Konishi, was closest to him before her death, being the one who inspired him to pursue his own identity instead of living in his parents’ shadow. So, it was a crushing blow when he discovered that her friendship was a ruse to get into good favour with her boss (his father).
Enter Yosuke’s shadow. This is one of the most important parts of Yosuke’s character because it defines the part of him that is kept hidden and leads him to become the person he is at the end of the game. In truth, Yosuke is tired of living a boring, small town life and all of the stress put on him by his family’s business and his fear of being alone. He yearns for the appreciation of his peers and, in part, sees Saki’s death as an opportunity to bring excitement and heroism into his life. These guilty feelings give rise to his shadow, a creature born from his hidden feelings that takes on his appearance and exaggeratedly reveals his secrets. After Souji defeats his shadow, Yosuke finally admits that the shadow is indeed just another facet of his personality, though a dark one. His ability to face his true self gives rise to Jiraiya, a persona of the magician arcana that is skilled in wind and support spells. From then on, Yosuke mustered the resolve to esteem himself and work for the good of others rather than himself, though core elements of his personality remained.
This is evident in his relationship with Souji. The main character is his best friend and partner, and it is obvious that he respects him a great deal. However, he also resents Souji for his natural leadership ability, strength, and intelligence-basically, for all of the things that Yosuke lacked. He reveals this slowly in their social link, admitting that his greatest desire was to be what Souji is. Eventually, though, he comes to the conclusion that what he really wants is equality, and therefore demands that Souji hit him as hard as he can. From there escalates a full blown fist fight; when things cool down, Yosuke seems satisfied, and presents Souji with a token of their friendship. After this, Yosuke proves to be a steadfast and loyal friend, his urgent desire to be the hero subsiding into a satisfaction with who he truly is, and what his purpose might be.
In battle, Yosuke is the party member that uses strong wind magic but is ultimately characterised by his support tactics (defence and attack boosts). He can also learn powerful healing spells. His physical attacks involve kunai and small throwing knives, with which he is quite skilled. He’s also seen listening to music in battle and out from a pair of headphones that he almost constantly wears around his neck. His fully evolved persona is Susano-o.
specific relationships with other investigation team members
chie their relationship is pretty on and off. They can get along at one moment and then be at each other’s throats at the next, mostly due to Yosuke’s occasional insensitivity and Chie’s impatience. They’re friends, but he sees his personality often clashes violently with hers.
yukiko he used to have a crush on this one, and sometimes shows continual interest, though Yukiko doesn’t return the feelings. He sees her as a friend and ally.
kanji he likes him well enough, but is somewhat threatened by his supposed sexuality. Kanji’s oddness causes Yosuke to be slightly off-put, but he does grow gradually accustomed to having him around. Derp homophobia, Yosuke.
teddie this guy is pretty much a thorn in his side and always has been, though it’s obvious that Yosuke has affection for him even when he doesn’t show it. He is easily annoyed by Teddie, especially when he gains his human form and stays at Yosuke’s house, but that annoyance never grows above mild irritation. He can’t really stay mad at him, seriously.
rise um she’s an idol and as such, Yosuke idolises her. However, when they meet and grow to know each other better, he learns to consider her as a friend instead of some magical pop star.
Really, Yosuke’s that character that is always the butt of every joke in the game-he’s constantly hurt or ridiculed, such as when he crashed his bike and fell into a trash can or got his balls nailed by Chie after breaking her DVD. This obviously ties into his awkwardness, but that isn’t to say that he can’t have moments of reason and strength; in fact, aside from Souji, Yosuke is one of the most sensible characters in regards to morality after his character’s growth. But he never really stops being Yosuke-he’s very taken with the girls in the game (maybe to a lesser extent than Teddie) and has an odd thing about homosexuality. He makes often sleights at Kanji’s sexuality in the game and makes several assertions of his own sexuality, likely due to discomfort. He can show an impressive range of emotion, from sarcasm to gravity to outrage, though his general persona is one of a typical teenage boy. He complains often about things, is eager to gossip about a cute girl, and is also quite friendly and open with others.
Essentially, Yosuke plays many roles in this game: as a sidekick, friend, inspiration, and comic relief. But mostly that last one.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
strengths
- the loyalty and strong sense of friendship he gained through his transformation of character.
- pretty athletically inclined. persona-using kind of does that to you.
- willpower and drive to do what is morally right.
- capable of being both intelligent and mature. it's...just not as obvious as you might think.
weaknesses
- tactless and rude in certain situations. doesn't really hesitate to speak his mind. (see: mystery food x)
- strong feelings of jealousy when around people he feels are better than him (see: souji), though this resentment has pretty much abated since his transformation.
- given to dissatisfaction with his life, and has a need for approval and to be constantly surrounded by people; this has caused him to become bitter with being forced into a "boring" life in a small town and jaded by others' negative opinions of him.
- he loves girls, but is REALLY bad at wooing them. i mean really bad. no, i'm not kidding.
- zio skills rofl

[ it’s definitely a video post, but that’s difficult to tell since the pokegear has turned itself on inside of yosuke’s pocket, in which he had jammed the device after inspecting the contents of his bag. the screen is pitch black and a muffled sound of fabric sliding against fabric along. after a moment, there’s a long, drawn out sigh of defeat as yosuke finally deems it necessary to speak. ]
Weird music, pokemon, waking up in a bed that definitely isn't mine... So this must be some kind of weird dream, right? Okay, I guess I can sort of deal with that.
[ another sigh, and then a strangled sound of frustration as a dull thump, as though someone has aimed a swift and irritated kick at the ground-unfortunately, this kick is a bit harder than intended, and causes the kicker to also give a small yelp of pain. when he speaks again, he’s now thoroughly annoyed: ]
...But why did I have to get the most useless pokemon in existence?
Third Person Sample:
If one cared to look up from their engaging battles with wild Rattata on route 29, they might see a teenager with mussed auburn hair and a dissatisfied expression participating in a rousing staring contest with a confused-looking slowpoke. Well, "staring contest" was perhaps not the correct term, as it seemed to be one-sided; the pokemon was glancing waywardly into the distance as Yosuke looked on with mounting irritation. He had only had his pokemon but for a few hours, and already it was starting to try his patience; of course, it knew how to fight (of course it did; how could it not?), but its concentration and drive in battle was...well, somewhat lacking. Which led its disgruntled master to cross his arms in front of his chest and stare up at the heavens with an expression that distinctly wanted to murmur oh why me?
When he finally looked back to the slowpoke, the pokemon had found the courtesy to return his stare with one of its own, though this one was unfocused and carefree.
"Okay, just so we're on the same page here...you're a pokemon, right? And so you're supposed to battle with other pokemon." He laid it all out plainly, exasperatedly. "So, why won't you do anything when I ask you to?"
"Slowwww..." came the gently lethargic reply, earning a guttural "ugh" from Yosuke, who was by this time fed up with trying to coax his pokemon into actually doing what it was given to him to do.
"Perfect," he said, throwing up his hands. "I'm gonna see if I can contact any of the team with that phone I found in my bag. Just...let me know when you're ready to make this work."
The slowpoke, as expected, made no movements nor sounds to indicate that it heard. Instead, it continued to rest quite happily in its same, fixed position. Yosuke made a small sound in the back of his throat.
He had a feeling that it would be a very long day.
