Well since someone or something from this world must've caused it, it was either a human or a pokémon. But I'm in much the same situation as you, this isn't my world either.

It's taken a liking to you because you're supposed to be its trainer, I figure. We're all given one to start with. I don't know if having pets is something people do on Alternia, but basically you're supposed to raise it, and it's going to fight for and protect you.

hm. Well, the thing you're holding can be used to find out a pokémon's species, you just have to point it at them. It'll give you some basic info too. There's wild pokémon outside of the towns which may attack you. ...aaand if your pokémon gets injured or sick, there's a place in each city that treats them for free.

...you'll find that this place is pretty much harmless in comparison to what you're used to, I think. And that should be about it for starters.
