drama cd (which further expands on the anime)
Personality:
Homura Akemi didn't use to be the way she was. She used to be a shy, quiet girl with little-to-no self-esteem. Homura was hospitalized for a long time because of her heart disease. It is unknown where her parents are, as she seems to be all alone in the world. Upon entering her first day at Mitakihara Middle School, she is meek and lacking confidence. She's cowardly, clumsy, nervous. When she can't perform at school, she's overwhelmed by feelings of uselessness. She feels like she can't do anything; she'll only cause trouble to other people... possibly for the rest of her life. Ironically, Homura is much like Madoka in the beginning. She wants to be of use, but she believes she has no talents or can provide anything of worth. She'll just be carrying a useless existence until she dies. But Madoka's words of encouragement inspired Homura. Homura came to admire Madoka for her kindness. Madoka became Homura's first friend. However on Walpurgisnacht, Madoka dies protecting her and pretty much the entire city. Homura makes a wish to redo her meeting with Madoka- to be the one who protects, instead of being protected. Madoka allowed Homura to believe in herself, and so she became a magical girl, thinking she could change things that would allow Madoka to live on. Homura is still clumsy and nervous, but she's more upbeat with her brand new ability, even though she can't quite control it yet. She thinks she can change the future with her new power; it gives her new confidence.
But things quickly go downhill. When she realizes that magical girls are doomed to become witches, she turns back time again to warn everyone. But no one believes her. They doubt her credibility. On Walpurgisnacht, she's about to become a witch with Madoka. Homura resigns herself to it... until Madoka makes a promise with her. To stop her from being tricked by Kyuubey, so none of this ever happens. Homura promises to save Madoka, no matter how many times she had to repeat the process. Even if she had to do it for an eternity. Her promise with Madoka becomes her sole purpose for existing. Her sole reason for doing everything she does from this point onward.
Homura becomes cold, jaded by her experiences. No longer would she depend on anyone. No one believed her when she tried to warn them. No one had to know then. She'd fight by herself for the sake of one wish from her most precious friend. It's uncertain exactly how many times Homura repeated the cycle up until the anime's timeline, but by the time we see her in the series, she's gotten the process down like clockwork. There was no need for unnecessary things- she had a goal to reach by the end of the month. In contrast to her clumsy, shy, nervous self, Homura becomes a no-nonsense, determined, aloof character. To Madoka and her friends, she won't hesitate to tell it like it is, even if it hurts. She seeks to dispel any sort of ideal fantasy about Magical Girls, as it's not nearly as glamorous as it seems. This tends to lead to misunderstandings between her and other characters who think she's the villain here. Yet Homura also doesn't bother to explain herself or her true intentions, and she won't show all her cards at once. Once again, who would believe her? She gave up on that a long time ago. So her words are cold and cut to the chase. Even when Madoka asks her to help Sayaka, she tells Madoka to just give up on her. She seems to lack sympathy, such as when Mami and Sayaka met their fate, though arguably one could say she's just used to it. "How can you act so cold?" Kyoko asks. It's like she isn't even human. Homura doesn't disagree. She considers herself as no longer human, though she does (albeit with no one around her) show a sense of sadness when Kyoko and Mami die.
Her real self isn't gone by any means. It's still there. There are times when Homura can't hide it, always prompted by Madoka. But after witnessing her friend die over and over with each cycle, Homura lost touch with herself. The more she repeated the cycle, the further she strayed from Madoka's side. Her promise with the girl is the only thing that reminds her of where she came from, which is why she will never give up. Everything she does is to save Madoka from her fate and to spare her from being involved in all this magical girlness. She'd protect her, even if she didn't know she was fighting for her.
In terms of her new public image though, she now appears like one cool customer instead of the bumbling girl from before. She's pretty, level-headed, and seems polite enough (to the students who ask her questions, anyway). It seems she became the cool person Madoka thought she could be!
Strengths/Weaknesses:
STRENGTHS: it's not very effective...
♦ Girl is all business. Things get done.
♦ She tends to show up in the nick of time (or at least fast enough to stop any Contract Making unless you're seyiku)
♦ Athletic and intelligent and well... resourceful? Not just in school either. Her research of Walpurgisnacht and magical girls/witches appear on her walls. Her massively extensive collection and knowledge of firearms/explosives to make up for her lack of a magical weapon. She's also shown making homemade bombs at one point.
♦ Persistent. She doesn't give up on her goal. Ever.
WEAKNESSES: it's super effective!
♦ Madoka, her only friend. Homura does everything for her, literally everything. Not only does she endlessly rewind a month's time to change Madoka's fate, she would even kill Madoka's own friend, if only to protect Madoka from pain. Her entire world revolves about her, but ultimately Madoka is her greatest weakness. Though innocuous, Madoka can make Homura's aloof attitude falter by words alone. Whether just a grimace or a clutched fist, Homura has to physically try to hold back. Madoka is the only one who can evoke that sort of reaction out of her. And if Homura ever realized that she could not change Madoka's fate, she'd fall into despair and become a witch. Her feelings for her friend give her strength, but they can also destroy her entirely.
♦ And if anything, Homura fears that all of her work will be for naught. There are times when she reprimands Madoka for wanting to sacrifice herself for her friends. What about Homura? What will happen to Homura, who has been working so hard to protect her? Will her efforts be made useless? The possibility evokes Homura's true fears, bringing her to tears.
♦ Less major than the other two, but Homura's coldness toward others often leads to misunderstandings. However, Homura herself doesn't bother to explain herself, which perpetuates said misunderstandings. She gave up trying a long time ago since no one would believe her.
♦ Her lack of sympathy for others also causes mistrust. Who could trust someone who doesn't seem to care about you?

Samples
First Person Sample:
[A young girl appears on the screen, dressed in school uniform. She stares coldly into the video camera, before flipping back her long, black hair. A small Skitty can be seen wandering around her feet, happily getting used to the new environment.]
It seems fate has changed its course for me. Honestly, I don't have time for this... My name is Akemi Homura. I require information on the current situation. Keep it short and simple, as I don't have a moment to waste.
[Whatever the matter, Homura couldn't afford to linger here. If she didn't get back soon, Madoka would be in grave danger. And this time, she might not be able to fix it.]
... That music.
Third Person Sample:
This was ridiculous. Brought here to catch and train "Pokémon"? Earn gym badges? Homura didn't have time to waste here. She had to return as soon as possible. Walpurgisnacht was quickly approaching; she had to go back and protect Madoka. But Homura quickly realized that she couldn't use her magic in this new land. She couldn't transform or use her ability to go back in time. And according to the information she had gathered thus far, she wouldn't be able to leave lest by random chance.
Homura's fists were drawn tight by her sides. Her shoulders hunched, her long black hair falling over her pale face. She trembled where she stood. Was it going to end like this? Would she never be able to change Madoka's fate? Homura choked back on a sob, fighting the tears that pricked at the back of her eyes. No, no, it couldn't end like this. She'd come so far, she'd done so much... It couldn't end like this!
There was still time. There had to be.
"Madoka..." Homura whimpered out.
"Skitty! Skit?" The Pokémon she'd been gifted with approached her, curious. Homura started and hastily wiped back a few lingering tears. Composing herself, she kneeled down, getting a better look at the small pink Skitty that was apparently now hers.
"Skitty!" the kitten-like Pokémon announced happily, drawing a small smile out of Homura. This little kitten... evoked something like nostalgia out of her. It was strange; she hadn't felt this way in a long, long time. It sort of reminded her of the small black cat that she and Madoka bonded over, the very first time they met.
'Amy'. That was the name Madoka had given the stray cat so long ago. The stray that Madoka had saved with her kind wish.
"Skitty? Is that your name?" Homura asked quietly, reaching a hand out to pet the Pokémon's ears. The Skitty responded amicably, rubbing against the girl's palm. Homura chuckled- that felt strange too. When was the last time she ever laughed? The last time she truly smiled? It felt so long ago, far from how she was now. "Is it all right if I called you 'Amy' instead?"
"Skit Skitty!"
"I'm glad... Let's go then, Amy."
Homura stood up, casually flipping back her long hair.
"Fine. I suppose I'll play this senseless game for a while," she said with a sigh. But she wouldn't cease trying to find a path back to Madoka.
She'd find a way, no matter what.
