Congratulations. Gym leaders are no pushovers, so earning that badge shows how much skill you really have.

Or how much my Pokemon have, at least.

A combination of both. The Pokémon are the ones out there doing the actual fighting, so their strength plays into it, while the trainer determines the best course of action for them to take. There's also the relationship the trainer has with his Pokémon and the level of trust that exists between them.

...I'm starting to sound like a native of Johto, huh?

Heh, just a little bit. I know it's all true, and I've been over it before, but... I still can't help feeling as if it's them that deserve the most credit. They're the ones putting themselves in danger, after all.

[ but if he were the one doing the fighting he'd say it's the commander that deserves the accolades. ]

I know the feeling. But after everything I've been through, I firmly believe that the leader takes just as much of the responsibility for a victory as his subordinates do.

I suppose you're right.

[ his dogpile of Pokemon in the background certainly seem to agree. ]

Well, now that you've earned your first badge, would you like some tips on how to approach the next gym?

If it's no trouble, yes. I'll need all the information I can get.

No trouble at all.

The next gym leader uses bugs. One of them is a Scizor, and since it's a mix of Bug and Steel, Fire is its only weakness.

I see. That shouldn't be too difficult, then, since I have Benji.

[ indicates his Growlithe, whose tail wags when his name is mentioned. ]

Yeah. As long as he's been trained enough, you should be just fine.

I'll focus on him in particular, and... hm. I wonder if I should catch a Flying type? I'd have to switch someone out.

It certainly wouldn't hurt. And you could do what I do and have a rotating roster so that they all get similar levels of experience.

Not a bad idea. I'd be able to complete my Pokedex faster that way, too.

Unfortunately, there isn't enough space in the PC for that to be feasible. Our boxes can only hold up to 18 Pokémon, so counting the six we have on us, that's a total of 24.

Twenty-four is still a lot... but even if I don't keep all of them, I can still register the information.
