[Ken is on screen, rolling the Storm badge between his fingers.]

I have four gym badges, now. That means I'm halfway to getting them all, right?

[Precocious twelve year old time.] Why does everyone get so excited about them? You're not even fighting, yourselves. My Pokemon like it, so I'll keep doing it. And I'll keep making sure they're ( Read more... )

Congratulations, Ken-san!

But, um... The moment you start thinking about it like that is the moment you cease to have any fun at all with Pokemon battles...

... Isn't that the point?

Why is it any fun? We're not the ones fighting, we're just ordering Pokemon to fight for us. They protect us, care for us, and are loyal to us and we use them to fight battles for fun. It's stupid, and they get hurt.

Oiiiii... You're kind of over thinking this, aren't you...? It's fun because it's fun. All of mine enjoy battling to varying degrees, so it's fun to watch them in their element and do what comes naturally.

If this was a normal world where them fighting actually resulted in death instead of them just passing out, I could understand having that mind set... But as it stands, it's not like they're ever in any mortal danger.

... Pokemon can die, Hayate-san.

Not during a battle though, which was my point.

Just because you've never seen it happen doesn't mean it can't. I've never died in a fight. [I might have died in a fight? Does it count as a fight if a robot is strangling you?] But I could one day.

Um... Yet again, Ken-san, I'm saying this based on how this world works... I can see where you're coming from, but even if you suffer some near fatal injuries you'll just pass out and wake up at a center here.

But anyway... It's fun because it's based on a fun video game? The mechanics are all still there, so the only real difference is you're there giving out the orders in person instead of pressing buttons!

So putting them through pain is okay. [linefais :|]

--eh?! I never said that... You're really focusing on the worst possible part of this... Like I said before, they enjoy battling, so taking some damage is to be expected...

And if a dog enjoys dog fights, does that make it okay?

Oi oi... That's completely different. It's like comparing a soldier to a hitman.

Why is it any different?

You take an animal, train it to fight, fight in an official fight and get money if you win.

... Ken-san, do you not like any kind of physical contact sport? Such as boxing? Karate? Wrestling? Those all have programs that millions of people watch for entertainment and they bet on and place wagers on all the time. Would you think of this differently if we were each given a martial artist to training with the goal of entering him or her in tournaments as we traveled?

I love sports. I play soccer, and I follow Sanada-san's boxing. But there's a big difference. When I play soccer, or Sanada-san boxes, we're the ones doing it. We're not going around making other people do it for us.

I let my Pokemon fight because they like it. But it's wrong to build an entire system on making animals fight for you. They're not people. They have personalities and they're alive, but Pokemon aren't people.

And if you keep a martial artist like you'd keep a Pokemon, I think it'd be considered slavery.

Oiiii... I was only trying to point out that it's not unusual for people to watch and enjoy fighting for entertainment when they themselves aren't directly doing it. You didn't need to break down my entire comparison piece by piece...

If you're going to make an argument, shouldn't it be a good one?
