- When they Cry 3; Umineko no Naku Koro ni EP4: Alliance of the Golden Witch
Short version of Ange's history that is totally relevant to everything in Umineko ever, especially when it comes to Ange's personality. Basically, in October 1986, when 'Ange Ushiromiya' was left home with her mother's relatives -- to be precise, her grandfather -- while everyone else went to the annual family conference that basically ruined Ange's life because everyone died. Except not really, since Eva-obasan was the only sole survivor of the 'Ushiromiya family' (though later we find out that this is not true, but that fact is irrelivant at this point). So here goes.
After the events of October 1986, when 'no one came home', as quoted above, Ange was left in a miserable state, and was left alone being babysat by her only 'living' relative - Ushiromiya Eva. Because Eva hated the fact that her whole family was dead, she treated Ange pretty badly. And even at the school that she went to, she was all alone. In Alliance of the Golden Witch, Ange even says, "......I was...dark. Because I was disliked." Nobody liked her at all, because she had no friends, no family to rely on, nothing. Basically... Ange was along and terrible. Each and every time, she was mocked by her fellow classmates, who teased her and made fun of her. Even when she believed that someone had said "Good day to you," it was just a farce - a miswave, basically.
"Since I was hated and didn't have a single friend, my time alone was the most kind to me." This part of Ange's personality is really important. Ange does not talk to people, and isn't what anyone would consider a "people's person". In fact, she is quite isolated from the world, and she doesn't care about what other people say about her, or what other people think. However, as everything else in Umineko, there are a large variety of contradictions. First of all, you do not make fun of her hair accessories. Why? Because if you do, you're dead. You don't make fun of the hair accessories, you don't make fun of them, it's the only piece of Battler that she has left, and she cherishes it, even if she doesn't tell anyone about it. Hush up, she's not tsundere towards her brother. Except... she kind of is. Another thing to note is Maria's grimoire that Ange keeps. She cherishes that as well, since she was ... somewhat friends with Maria (who she calls her onee-chan, no matter how old she is).
Wait a second, there's more contradictions in Ange's personality? How can this be? Well, let me explain. Ange's cold and dark personality is only due to the fact that hey, her whole family is dead. Or at least, that's what she believes. In fact, when it comes down to it -- when she is told that she can be with her onii-chan forever, or she can help out in his battle against Beatrice, she takes that chance. Why? Because she was told that she could 'at least save Battler' by Bernkastel. At the very least, save one piece. Ange took it with that chance. She wanted so badly to reunite with her brother again, and get the happy end she always wanted. As if. Nobody would let that happen. Not Bernkastel, not Lambda, not Beatrice. Nobody. It was all just a trick to 'use' her. She may have powers of a witch, sure. She's ANGE-Beatrice, the Witch of Ressurection, after all. But she was, after all, just a piece of Bernkastel's. A good example of this is shown in both EP4 and EP6, but I will only present to you the EP4 example, since that is the timepoint I will be taking Ange from.
"Didn't Bern make it sound as though, if you defeated Beato, your big brother would come back?"
"............Who knows. ...I don't feel like talking with you."
- Lambdadelta and Ange Ushiromiya, When they Cry 3; Umineko no Naku Koro ni EP4: Alliance of the Golden Witch
So basically, Ange is pretty naive. Not naive to a point that she'll believe every single word you say, but to a point where yes, she'll believe in witches and magic -- to an extent, actually. Now, what do I mean by 'an extent'? Well, Ange herself is a witch who understands witches. Their powers, abilities, and whatnot. Of course, she does also understand their cruelty. Being a witch herself, she wants to stop witches. Actually, to be more precise, Beatrice. Or... the Beatrice in Purgatorio. Near the end of EP4, where Ange tells MARIA that she can revive Sakutaro, which was supposed to be impossible to do, she manages to do it. Only she can do it.
"Don't try to fool anyone. Why can't you revive Sakutarou? There's only one answer. It's because you aren't a real witch!"
- When they Cry 3; Umineko no Naku Koro ni EP4: Alliance of the Golden Witch
Ange can't be fooled that easily when it comes to anything other than her family (especially her onii-chan) when it comes to the concept of 'belief'. Basically, in MARIA's world, there are witches, magic, and the like - but in Ange's world, things like that do not exist. There is only the 'human' criminal. Ange also acknoledges Sakutaro's existance and the Stake's existance -- mostly, she will acknoledge that they 'exist', but that doesn't mean that they exist on the same plane as we do. She's pretty contradictory when it comes to her beliefs. She believes that magic exists on the terms of Maria's world, and her world when she became ANGE-Beatrice, but doesn't believe that magic was the cause of the deaths on that day in Rokkenjima.
Another thing to note is the fact that Ange, even though she 'plays things cooly' is quite fragile. Items are her only reason of living, and she even says that she wants to die. However, she doesn't do this because she wants to learn the truth of that Rokkenjima. And perhaps even the fact that Battler was actually still alive. Which he was. When Battler's spirit was crushed near the end of the third and fourth game, she was the one who had to knock some sense into him. She had to remind him of the real reason why he was playing.
Yes, indeed, Ange is a cruel and somewhat selfish person -- she wanted her brother to come back. As she said in red, she was lonely, and her whole family was stolen right in front of her eyes and she couldn't take it anymore. She knew that she, as a piece, would never be reunited with Battler. This was her biggest flaw, and the biggest weakness she ever made... ... she told him who she was. Yes, she would indeed sacrifice her life, her soul, and her very being for her older brother. He was the only family that really mattered. That's why she told him not to see her die in Purgatorio. She knew her purpose. It wasn't to be selfish -- to stay by her brother's side for all eternity, for then she would be the same as the witches. She also withstood the pain in order to proclaim her last words to her brother.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
✓ She's not afraid to die. At all. In fact, she'd rather die.
✓ She can speak English! This is all Battler's fault! It's possible that she can also read and write the darned language.
✓ Ange is quite athletic, since she's... jumped off a three-story building.
✓ She's not afraid of anything. Or... almost anything.
✓ Battler onii-chan is important to her.
✓ She has a good perspective on other's perspectives. And she won't make fun of you for it. For example, if you believed in Christ, she'll believe that he exists in your world. Same goes for Beatrice. 'Beatrice' exists in Maria's world, but it isn't the 'Beatrice' that Battler is fighting.
✓ Not applicable in Route, but she's a witch hunting witch. Basically, this means that she has the same powers as a witch, but she denied the fact that witches exist in Battler's world. Along with her own world. She doesn't believe that magic is the thing that destroyed her family.
✓ She cherishes her main family, especially the siblings. All the others (uncles, aunts, etc), she doesn't really care about them.
✓ Doesn't care what people say about her.
✓ Is one of the only people who can bring Battler back to his senses.
✖ Battler onii-chan is important to her.
✖ You do not make fun of her hair ornaments. Ever.
✖ Ange gets tricked by witches easily. She's easily manipulated by them, though not by average people who know nothing about her.
✖ Mentally fragile. She cares about Battler too much, and when the last item that is important to her from him is trashed, she becomes upset. Same can be said about Maria's grimoire.
✖ Friends? What are those? Her only friends are the stakes, who she then betrays and becomes enemies with. Oops.
✖ Is considered as 'creepy' and is alone most of the time, which is why she doesn't have friends.
✖ Has a huge temper when mad. She has gone to wanting to kill all her classmates to denying the existence of the stakes, et cetera.

First Person Sample: Aaah, it's useless, it's all useless.
What kind of trick are you trying to pull now, Bernkastel? I'm tired of playing your games -- [a pause, before she realizes that this is neither Purgatorio -- the Metaworld, Rokkenjima -- or the Earth that she knew.] What kakera is this? You don't plan on using a discarded piece for a new game, do you... ...? Or have you already gotten bored with that old chessboard of yours?
[She then stares at the Sneasel, who seems to put a paw up towards her, with a smirk.] So, is this your new game? Very well... I'll play this game of yours. I'll be the sacrificial piece once again. I may not know what these creatures are -- [ however, as she says that, Sneasel manages to go into Ange's bag and take out the manual. ] Pokémon, huh? So this is your new game. I'll take that challenge, then. I don't know who that woman was who called me her 'mother' -- but it definitely wasn't Kyrie-okaasan.
A dark and ice type... Sneasel... that's what you are? [And he responds with a slight, "Snea!" in response, grinning] I see. I'm sure... ... maybe, we can be friends. We'll find the truth of this world, Sneasel... I'm sure of it. [Even if she won't see her oniichan again. At the very least... ... she can go back home. ] After all, this is a witch's game.
[Though this uneasy feeling... is definitely because she can't use magic. She knows that, in the back of her mind. But... it's alright. It will be fine.]
Third Person Sample:
"You're a delusion, aren't you? Aaah, it's useless, it's all useless! I haven't gotten out yet...." Those were the last words that she had heard over the Pokégear before she had attempted to convince her older brother -- Battler-oniichan that this place - Johto, was in fact, not a delusion. It was another fragment, or as Bernkastel liked to call it... a new 'kakera' that they would be eternally stuck in until they could solve it.
Magic? Witches? Of course, this could have been possible if Bernkastel had her powers. The same went for Beatrice and the stakes. However, she, Ange Ushiromiya -- the ANGE-Beatrice of 1998, couldn't allow herself to think in the same way that her brother thought. Was it really all useless? No, of course not. He had told her that he was from the sixth game... had it really been that long?
That didn't matter. In this world, she was another piece. A pawn to the witch... or whoever the game master was. It didn't matter. She'd defeat that culprit and go home. Together, with her -- no. That wasn't her purpose. Her purpose here was not to play around her her brother. Sure, if she stayed in this world she could be with him always. But that wasn't the reason why she was here.
That was it, right, Bernkastel? Ange told herself, giving a small reminder of the failure that she had almost done in the fourth game. She couldn't repeat that again. Those thoughts... they had to disappear. Her duty from here on out was to find her onii-chan and return him back to the way he was. Back to when he was still kind and gentle. This onii-chan wasn't the one she knew. He had gone mad... insane, in many ways. Sure, she had noticed that something was wrong with him and had attempted to tell him that he wasn't crazy -- that he wasn't going nuts, or was wrong in the head, but her words couldn't reach.
What could she do to remind him of who he was? When would they solve the riddle? When would they find out the truth? Was it something that could never be reached....? Just like the day when her family was taken away from her. Who was the culprit? Who was the one who took her world from her? Was it really -- no, she couldn't think about that now. That was something that she would deal with in the future.
But for now.... she had to meet with Battler and make things right. He had to come back to his senses, just like what she had done before.
