Yes, that certainly can happen.
Your mind likely shut down to try and rest, and therefor couldn't 'record', so to speak, anything you did.
If left long enough, you are also at risk of hallucinating.

Well perhaps talking about it will assist you in sorting them out.
Translating thoughts in a way that makes sense when you vocalize them can often help organize what you're thinking, and also bring more attention to it now that you yourself are saying it rather than someone else.
