BACKGROUND: Shino's life, for the most part, has been incredibly boring compared to most other mutants.
His parents were first generation Japanese immigrants, having moved to a quiet suburb in Philadelphia not long after getting married. For a change of pace, more than anything else. So they found a place they liked, settled down and in due time, Shino's mother became pregnant.
Unfortunately, she died giving birth. It was a hard time, of course, and most likely left an impression on the newborn that lasted, however subtle. But they soldiered on, and with considerable amounts of help from friends and colleagues (often unasked for,) his father got to grips with raising his son on his own.
Shino was an early bloomer, towering over several of his friends as a child. His voice broke first out of all his classmates and his powers made themselves known fairly early on too.
There was no dramatic moment of manifestation for him -- well. The sudden swarm of insects when his dad very nearly crashed the car on their way home from school may very likely have been it, but he doesn't like to speculate -- but when he was about ten years old, he realised he could... understand insects. He tried to ignore it for the longest time, but it was kind of undeniable after a while of being able to understand all the signals and the way bugs in the area seemed to flock towards him whenever he was even the slightest bit distressed. The word 'mutant' certainly crossed his mind more than once.
In order to better understand what was happening, he spent a vast amount of time researching different types of insects and learned to differentiate between the sounds and signals after many, many headaches and long nights. As a result he became (even more) withdrawn and introverted and began surpressing his emotions so as to avoid any more unfortunate swarms.
After a while of debating with himself, Shino eventually dropped the bomb on his dad. He'd been researching things himself and after several hours of disbelief and HEATED DEBATE, it was eventually agreed that Shino would go to the institute in order to better understand his powers.
PERSONALITY: Shino is someone who fits pretty well in the role of the Observer. He's very withdrawn, preferring not to speak unless absolutely neccessary and very rarely does he show any outward displays of emotion. Instead, he stands back and takes in everything that's going on around him. His approach to things can be very... clinical. He tends to break things down into facts and figures and tends to be very, "and that's the way it is," about it.
It'd be very easy to write him off as being anti-social, but that's not true so much as he's just socially awkward. Especially with how introverted he's become since his powers manifested, he finds it very hard to reach out and relate to people. He's more than willing to try, but social situations - especially with large groups of people - make him intensely uneasy.
He's also someone who's easy to mistake as being arrogant. He's confident, yes, but he also knows where he excels and where he's restricted and this alongside his observant nature make it easy for him to make a fairly accurate estimation of the outcome of any situation he finds himself in. His problem is that he is very blunt and to the point. Shinoo is brutally honest, he doesn't see the point in pussyfooting around a subject or being false about it as all it does in the long run (and even the short run) is waste the time of all involved.
APPEARANCE: He can be a fairly intimidating looking guy at times. Shino stands at 5'7 and weighs about 125lbs with bushy, brown hair and dark eyes. Admittedly it's not very big but factor in the rest of his appearance. He's probably the kind of guy who gets asked if he's cold a lot, most often wearing hooded coats with high collars that obscure his face and a pair of dark goggles or sunglasses. Most definitely not the kind of guy you want to bump into in an alleyway at night.
POWERS: Shino has the ability to communicate with and control insects. He's in almost constant communication with the critters around him (goddamn they are loud when you actually pay attention.) As it is, he finds small bugs, like ants and fleas the easiest to communicate with, but if he really focuses he can extend this to wasps, beetles, etc. etc.
