Oo, Johanna:
1. She has always known that the Judge was not her real father. It was something that was repeated to her over and over so that she would recognize what she was rescued from (a neglecting mother and a drunken, violent father, according to Turpin) and be grateful. However, she never quite believed what she was told about her parents, and every night before she went to bed when she was very young, she used to pray to God that they could hear her and ask them questions. Sometimes she thought she got answers from the moving shadows in the room, but they were always steeped in more mystery.
2. Before the Judge got it into his head to lock her in her room and keep her from developing, she displayed many traits that would remind people of her parents; she could make anyone love her merely by smiling at them and she had a determination about her person that could be truly frightening at times. She was also rather good with kitchen knives and liked to help the household staff prepare meals until the Judge caught her and demanded she stop.
3. She often has nightmares. Raging, terrible nightmares full of images and faces that she doesn't recognize. The Judge has tried many things to stop her from waking in the middle of the night screaming, from warm milk before bed to hypnosis, but nothing ever works.
4. She will unfortunately never know how her romance with Anthony mirrors that of her own parents in small but significant ways - being a girl desired by many, intended for someone else and won over merely by a sweet face and innocent eagerness. Fleeing with no comfort of immediate security, but still trusting entirely that the one she loves will be good with his word.

Oh lord. I really, really want to believe that in light of #4, Johanna and Anthony live a long, happy, prosperous life together. Because someone there has got to.
