A warning to the people, the good and the evil: This is war.

When Captain America broods, everybody notices. He's short, distant, uncommunicative. Some would even say rude. Fortunately he has an excuse, for the first few days - his arm, still healing. But once it's back in working order (he misses two missions in the four short days that it takes), there's no reason for him to be acting like this. At least, ( Read more... )

When Cassie Holmes broods, it's a day ending in -y. It's nothing out of the ordinary for her, and so she hardly pays it any attention as she stalks through the halls of the Harbor Defense Museum. She doesn't know why she's here, only that she had a vision that made no sense, and a drawing of what could be a ship to go off of. The only disappointing thing about following up on a vision that makes no sense and seems to have no real meaning is that everything is jumbled and aimless, and she's left wondering if she's wasting her time.

She realizes that not only is she one of the only people around in the museum, she's definitely the only kid, and she tries to act as natural as possible while looking around. It's a bit hard to do, given the color of her hair, her short skirt, and the way her combat boots stomp across the floor; but she's so far managed to avoid questions about where her parents or her teacher is.

She catches sight of a guy very fixed on looking at a display, and arches an eyebrow curiously. Normally, she wouldn't bother giving someone the time of day, but she's frustrated and she has time to burn.

"If you keep that face for too long, it might stay that way. True story." And just to freak him out a little, she puts her face into a weird expression and holds it there, waiting to see if he thinks she's serious.

He looks at her and startles, more at her hair and her clothes than the expression. He'll get used to all the... colors and short skirts eventually, though whether he ever gets used to young girls wearing them he doesn't know.

Which is something that these days makes him sexist, or chauvinist, or misogynistic - he doesn't really remember. He just tries to be polite, regardless. "It hasn't stuck yet."

Steve flashes a tiny smile, his glance going briefly over her head looking for a class or parent. Of course, it's equally possible she's here on her own - something else he has to get used to. "Uh..."

He probably shouldn't ask though.

"Uh?" She questions him, opening up her sketchbook to flip through it. Something in the display might possibly be drawn on the last filled page, and she squints down at the image before glancing up at the guy finally. Before, he had seemed familiar enough to randomly go up and speak to, but now that he was looking at her, she was left a little awestruck.

"You can't be him." She whispers, reaching up to poke at this look alike's arm. Whoever this was, it wasn't Nick, but he was almost identical. They even sounded alike.

"Okay, I think me seeing this place has a reason now. Maybe not a sane or good reason, but I'll take what I can get these days." She's still awestruck as she stands before him, and once again reaches up to poke at him, this time his face.

"Um," he says, which isn't much of an improvement on "uh," really. He lets her poke him, standing with the patience of someone who's been through this a few times before. Usually from younger kids. "Did you... want me to sign something?"

That's what mostly gets asked for- that and pictures, which he doesn't mind, if she doesn't mind a somber looking Captain America instead of his usual poster-perfect smile.

"Why would I want you to sign something?" She looks confused, and still a little dumbstruck, and she's staring up at him with wide eyes. "You don't have a brother anywhere out there, do you? Maybe in Hong Kong?"

She takes a step back and clutches her sketchbook close to her chest. Maybe she's passed out in a hotel somewhere, drunk and dreaming all of this.

"Uh. No reason." She doesn't seem to know him, then. Which makes this... weirder.

"My father died when I was a baby, and my mother went when I was a kid, so... I really doubt that." He smiles a little. "Sorry. Why do you ask?"

"You look and sound just like someone named Nick. His hair is a lot worse than yours, and he has terrible manners. So you can't be him, but you are him." It's very unsettling to her, but she still tries to act cool about this. She even manages to once again poke at him.

He endures the poking without complaint. "Pretty sure I'm me," Steve says, almost apologetically. That's one mystery solved- somebody who looks like him. He thought it would be something more serious, the way she was talking. "What was it you meant, about seeing this place for a reason?"

He knows why he's here. He's curious why she is.

"You're you, but you could be related to him without knowing it." She shrugs, ignoring his question for a moment. She's taking a little bit of time to try and come up with a reasonably believable lie. She glances down at her sketchbook, before turning it toward him. He probably won't be able to make out the warship or the weapons. The only recognizable thing on the whole page was a star, but she didn't quite get why it was there.

"I see things. Usually it's for a reason. I think you're the reason I'm here. I'm supposed to meet you for something, only I haven't seen just what yet."

"Oh, that's me!" He doesn't even question what she can do - he's well beyond being surprised by that kind of thing. Steve points to the star, grinning a little. "And the displays, right?"

He straightens up, scanning the area with a new focus, looking for anything out of the ordinary. He doesn't see it, but it doesn't mean it's not there. Or that it won't be. "So you're psychic?"

She can't help but grin as he actually recognizes and makes sense out of her drawings. No one's been able to do that before, not even herself in most cases. In an instant, this guy is endeared to her and she smiles nervously as she steps in closer to him, nodding just a little.

"Something like that. I can see someone's future intent. It's...complicated. Really complicated."

"...Huh." It sounds complicated. Steve looks back down at her, his concern stamped on his face as clearly as most emotions tend to be. "All the time? Or does it..."

He waves a hand around. "I guess either way it must be hard to make sense of it. This guy, Nick, he's a friend?"

"Cassie!"

Nick is half jogging, half stalking through the museum looking for the girl as his brain flops between worry and general pissiness. Honestly, he decides to pass out for a few hours in their Manhattan flophouse hotel room and he wakes up to find Cassie gone with nothing but a note.

Fun fact: her penmanship's as refined as her artistic ability.

So after deciphering the chicken scratch and hopping a few trains, Nick hits the room at a flat maybe-jog and is really hoping he got this one right. Also that she's not drunk again. It's way too early in the day to deal with that.

Once he sees that riot of color, he heads over with an annoyed frown and sounds like a disgruntled big brother. "Next time you wanna go on a day trip, could maybe try and wake me up first?" He hasn't noticed the other guy yet - give him a minute.

Lucky for Nick, Cassie hasn't had a drop to drink. She's perfectly sober, thank you very much. And also very much involved in this conversation with the much more charming version of you. She hears him call her name as he runs through the museum, and almost considers grabbing Steve's hand to run off. But before she has time to act, Nick is there, looking ten kinds of pissed off and annoying, and Cassie just sighs and rolls her eyes.

"Nick, this is your face twin. Could you try and be decent around him? You're making a terrible first impression. I know you like those, but for once could you not?"

Her tone is very charming and sweet, very much like a younger sister trying to humiliate their older sibling. She turns to glance up at Nick with a grin, an honest and sincere one that says, 'look at what I found!!'

"Oh, Steve. My name is Steve Rogers." He sounds a little distracted. He is a little distracted. When she said Nick looked like him, Steve assumed she meant similar, not... identical to. He's gaping. A bit. A lot. He catches himself and shakes it off, holding out one hand and looking very wary.

"Nice to meet you."

"Like you're anybody to talk, chicken thief."

As for the rest of what she's saying, Nick shakes his head in exasperation, still not having gotten a good look at the dude she's hanging with. "Cassie, what are you talking about, 'face twin', that doesn't even make any sense-"

He's feeling Steve stare a hole in his head, and he's about to turn and snap for him to take a picture, it'd last longer. But the snark dies on his lips when he finally looks at Steve. It's like looking into a mirror - a mirror that shaves and might possibly be on steroids.

"The shit?" Yeah, the hand is being patently ignored. Nick isn't much for the whole pleasantry thing even when his brain hasn't just exploded from confusion.
