4c: Paper

After another whimper, he couldn’t take it anymore. Mamoru threw down his paper and looked at Usagi, who had a stack of small squares of papers and a large jar in front of her. Currently she was trying to fold one of the little squares, and evidently kept cutting her fingers doing it.

“What are you doing, Odango-brains?” Without looking up, she continued to fold her piece of paper, wincing every time she grazed a finger.

“I’m making origami cranes. There’s a legend about how if you make 1,000 origami cranes, you’ll be granted a wish.” He raised an eyebrow.

“So you’re going to make 1,000 origami cranes? You’d better stock up on bandaids and blood transfusions.” He picked his paper back up and she smiled, continuing to fold.

“Yup, I’m going to make 1,000 cranes and put them in this jar with my wish, so it will come true. Just you wait.” She finished the first crane, opened the jar, and set it inside.

Several weeks later, Mamoru came into the arcade for his afternoon coffee and was greeted by a large jar packed with tiny paper cranes. On top sat a note, addressed to him:

Mamoru, I hope my wish comes true, and you find the happiness I know you want. If so, it’ll be worth the paper cuts.
