I'm totally bogged down with work, so much so that I have not had time to write a travel report to Germany yet. However, we did take time to attend the Comic Arts Professional Society annual banquet last night. In the past, we had honored the likes of Will Eisner, Jack Davis, Stan Lee, Stan Freberg, Jerry Robinson, and Ray Bradbury. This year was a tribute to comics legend Russ Heath. Russ is the first honoree that is a very active CAPS member, regularly attending meetings. The festivities took place at the 94th Aero Squadron next to the Van Nuys airport, so there was the occasional small plane taking off or landing. Each attendee received a tribute book for Russ.

Cocktails and hor d'oeuvres were enjoyed in the bombed out section adjacent to the restaurant. The Lindy Sisters provided entertainment, with old songs, such as Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and Chatanooga Choo-choo. I told Floyd Norman that I knew all these songs. Floyd replied that he had actually seen the Andrew Sisters sing them.

Attendees included Sergio Aragones, Dean Yeager, Floyd Norman, Tom Sito, Paul Power, Mike Kazaleh, Mell and Sally Lazarus, June Foray, Stephen Silver, and so many others.
Dinner was pretty good. Sharon and I both had the tri-tip. President Pat McGreal opened up the program and introduced MC Bill Morrison. General George Patten made an appearance and spoke about Russ' stories for GI Combat, Our Army at War, and Star Spangled War Stories. Paul Power related related a story about a "feud" between Russ and Dave Stevens at Hanna Barbera. Other speakers included National Lampoon editor Michael Gross, Mark Evanier, and William Stout (who spoke of how Russ wound up living at the Playboy Mansion). Scott Shaw! dissected a story in Front Line Combat for which Russ not only bought military uniforms, but hired a photographer to photograph him posing in them. The result was a beautifully drawn story, but all the Americans looked exactly like Russ.

The highlight of the night was the presentation of The Sergio, a bronze award designed by and named for Sergio Aragones. This was followed by a camouflage-frostinged birthday cake.

A grand time was had by all.
Extra points to anyone who can tell me what "Okay, hot-shot" (the title of today's blog) refers to.
Good buddy Mark Evanier writes a wonderful account of the evening, including a clip of the Lindy Sisters:
