Permutations of Tooru, Yuki, and Kyou

I recently commented in ninjatrauma's lj regarding the Yuki-Tooru-Kyou 'triangle' in Furuba and whether it was ever hinted throughout the early volumes of the manga which one was intended as the romantic choice for Tooru. I expressed myself poorly there, so I'm going to try again here. I was talking with Grr about it in order to figure out how to phrase what I wanted to say in a coherent manner. Note that I try not to give away spoilers because he only read the first volume of Fruits Basket a long while back and I intend to feed him the rest eventually.

I told him that while I was reading Fruits Basket in the beginning I thought that Takaya-sensei did a good job with not making a Tooru romance the main issue and equalling out Yukiru and Kyouru vibes. However, I was always bothered by the fact that, for the most part, Yuki and Kyou got along well enough when it came to Tooru and that something about it didn't sit right with me. It became even more pronounced in later chapters and I just couldn't place the dynamic. I said specifically, "It isn't how each of them responds to Tooru, it's how they respond to each other with regard to Tooru. Grr immediately said, "Well, obviously one of them is into her and the other one isn't, and they both understand this so it's a non-issue for them." I was taken aback by his 'obviously'. I never made that leap even though I did pick up on the clues and feel that I should have in retrospect (this is typical of me).

I really do wish he would just read it already. I'd love to know what he thinks of all the other relationships and especially of Shigure.
