Parellism by heaven85

Prologue:

She stood in front of all the ruin that lay before her. Houses and buildings were completely ruined. Monuments beheaded and millions of dead bodies laid on the floor. She could still smell the blood and see the horrors that had occured just a few hours before. How could this had happen? Why does power, greed and hate corrupt so many? Why didn't she see it coming.

She bent down and carried the life of one of her best friends and before he said a word she promised that she would never let it happen again. She then saw him speaking once more. She leaned in and heard his final words: No matter what happens I will always be here for you. Always. And then he left the world

She dried her tears and made a promise to herself to never let something like this. For herself, her friends and for him.

18 year old Melanie Griscott walked towards the command centre where she worked or did her job. She was part of a special investigative team that watched over the entrance towards the millions of parallel universes. If it was not regulated properly than anyone or anything would be able to alter the order of the universe and tragedy strikes. What happens if that occurs? That is where I come in. I enter the dimension where the disturbance occurs and try source out the disturbance, contain it so that nobody knows what really happens. However when I enter the world I would gain a whole new history, name and life and what I do there is all up to me.

After what happened a millenia ago would never repeat itself again. Ever.

Chapter 1

A young woman with light brown curly hair walked into a large building made up of a thousands different windows and doors. She took her usual route and headed towards her office area and signed in and placed her hands into the complicated security system identified her.

“Agent Melanie Griscott, you may enter,” It printed out.

Melanie Griscott looked like any normal 18 year old but in reality she was over 1000 years old. She has lived thousands of different lives as her job required her to.

Melanie smiled as she looked at an old faded picture of her and remembered back to her first day on the job.

*flashback*

“Melanie Griscott, it’s wonderful of you to join the team,” an older man had told her.

“Thank you but I was wondering if you could explain what kind of job this is?” Melanie asked sheepishly.

“That isn’t a problem. We never meant to be clear. You are part of an investigative team or type of police that nobody is supposed to know about. You are responsible for monitoring the lives of many different dimensions in the universe and to enforce and remove any disturbance if it is discovered,” He explained.

“Different worlds?” Melanie asked in disbelief.

“Yes there are different worlds. If anybody knew who we were then that would spell trouble for the millions of people living on this earth and in the universe. There are thousands upon thousands of dimensions out there in the universe that nobody knows about. There are worlds out in the universe that people believed to be fairy tales but in truth they really do exist,” He explained.

“This is a lot to take in but how come I never knew anything about this?” Melanie replied still in shock and sat down to process this information.

“The world used to be must more open to different people and different organisms that we used to live much more peacefully but as the populations grew so did greed and with greed came blood shed and as evolution happened, different types of beings also came into the world with special gifts or powers.

Good versus evil has been a problem since the inception of this universe. Whenever someone good was born, an evil counterpart also came into existence and because of this great battles have occurred as evil tried to gain more power by taking over many different worlds. In order to keep the worlds safe, a sort of universal police was created to create barriers between the different worlds so that the balance in the world can be retained.

The knowledge of the other worlds has been erased from their memories over the millions of years of evolution so the knowledge of these other worlds existing are not known to anybody in any of the dimensions except to those who work here,” He explained.

“Wow, I had no idea, Speaking of here Where is here?” Melanie asked him.

“I do not know, I don’t think anybody does. We are the center of everything, centre of nothing. It is best not to know for the security of this universe,” He answered.

“Thank you. What is your name? I’m sorry but I didn’t catch it,” Melanie asked.

“I’m known as Brett,” He told her.

She broke out of her thoughts as she heard a familiar voice.

“How are you Melanie?” Charlie Bradford asked.

Melanie turned towards the handsome young man with the light brown hair that swayed in the wind and sparking hazel green eyes and replied, “As good as I can be.”

“Was it a tough day?” Charlie asked with a grin.

“As to be expected in this job. I keep on forgetting that you are quite new here,” Melanie replied with a grin.

“Not all of us can be as experience as you are Melanie,” Charlie answered with a grin.

Charlie had been the top of his class before he was selected to join our elite group. He was quite young in our standards. He has only been doing this for a couple of hundred years. But he was a quick learner and it was one of her assignments to train him.

“Agent Skylar, can I speak to you for a moment?” An older distinguished man asked.

“I’ll be there right now Guardian Eavensyion,” Melanie responded with a slight bow.

“I have been reviewing your progress and have found that you have an excellent record and I was wondering how you have been doing?” Guardian Eavensyion asked.

“Thank you so much for your concern and I am not at all tired and am glad to be of service,” Melanie added with a smile.

“We do know that today is not the best day for you and we guardian would like to know if you needed any time off because you have been working really hard,” He added.

“I appreciate the concern but I really am totally fine and I don’t need to time off,” Melanie answered quickly with a slight bow.

Melanie never wanted to think about what happened all those years ago on this very day. Images of many dead images sprung to mind as his eyes came into my mind, the tears came flooding back and she excused herself from the guardian.

‘Why did that have to happen? Why wasn’t I able to stop it? Why wasn’t I able to see it coming why?’ She asked herself for the millionth time.

“Are you okay?” Charlie asked sympathetically.

“I just need a few minutes to clear my head,” Melanie told him with a slight smile.

Charlie just nodded as he knew that she needed this time to herself.

Melanie headed towards the monitoring station where there were tons of video screens and she quickly turned on a free screen to see what was happening in some of the dimensions that she was responsible for. She smiled as she watched some of the animals peacefully chewing on their food and children smiling and playing not knowing that anything horrible had happened to them during their past. Ignorance was bliss, it was a luxury that she was no longer privy to as she had seen so many horrible things happen for her to be that happy again.

Just then the alarm sounded and she immediately headed back towards the headquarters and waited to be briefed.

“We have a breach in the dimension of Alvadasea. There are unusual high levels of violence and disturbances in the area that have yet to be identified. Agent Skylar, you will be in charge of this assignment,” Guardian Eavensyion responded.

Melanie nodded with a bow and took the file in his hand and proceeded to look through the information.

“Agent Skylar, what are our identities this time?” Charlie asked.

“Agent Growler, haven’t I told you to call me Melanie?” She asked with a firm look.

“But it is more accurate to call you by our code names,” Charlie added with a sly grin.

“Well then let’s see what kind of role I will assign you? Janitor maybe?” Melanie replied with a sly grin.

“Okay, I will obey by the rules,” Charlie replied raising his arms in defeat.

“That’s a good agent,” Melanie replied with a smirk.

“So what role will I be assigned to this time? Charlie asked again.

“Well we are assigned to look out for some named Nathaniel Gillenstein age 26. His occupation is as a researcher in Deuville general Hospital,” Melanie read out.

“Okay then, I guess that means we will be assigned to work at the hospital then right?” Charlie guessed.

“That’s right. Are you ready to go?” Melanie asked.

“Yes I am,” Charlie replied with a nod.

Melanie moved forward and pressed the buttons need to open the portal toward the dimension that she needed to head towards. Entry into the different dimensions requires a certain security clearance and a certain level of knowledge. In order to open the portal the presence of a guardian must also be present in order for the portal to open.

Once approval is granted the portal would open. The guardian of Alvadasea entered their password and the portal opened.

Melanie and Charlie entered the portal and found themselves in a giant hallway and in a few minutes were transported to their new location.

Once they have landed Melanie’s head filled with new information that would be required for her to fit her position as new research associate for Nathaniel’s project.

She turned around and saw Charlie curiously walking about and she shook her hand and asked, “Daniel what are you doing?”

Charlie turned around and responded, “Were you calling for me?”

“Yes Daniel. That is your name,” Melanie replied rolling her eyes.

“Right, I just have to get used to it. What is your name?” Charlie asked.

“My name is now Madeline Maestrom,” Melanie responded.

“I’m still getting used to having the different identities every once in a while,” Charlie responded.

Melanie and Charlie headed towards the lab where they would be introduced to their colleagues.

“Hi, you must be the new member of our research team,” a older white bearded individual that she knew to be name Dr. Austeen spoke up as he saw them enter the room.

“Hi I’m Madeline Maestrom and this is Daniel Cliveston,” Melanie explained.

“It’s wonderful to meet you. I’m Dr. Austeen and that is Nathaniel Gillenstein,” He shook both her and Charlie’s hands.

When Melanie turned towards Nathaniel she was in for a shock as she met a very familiar set of brown eyes and the same set of curly locks made her take a step back.

“Are you alright?” Nathaniel asked her.

“I’m fine, nice to meet you. I’m Madeline,” Melanie responded.

“I already know that,” Nathaniel responded with a twinkle in his eyes.

“Right, this is a colleague of mine Daniel Cliveston,” Melanie told him with a smile.

“Nice to meet you Daniel,” Nathaniel responded with a smile as he shook his hand.

“Why don’t we show you the around the lab and introduce you to more people?” Dr. Austeen suggested.

“Lead the way,” Melanie told him with a smile and turned back to look at Nathaniel.

“Could that be him?” Melanie asked herself.

“Mel, are you alright?” Charlie whispered into her ear concerned.

“I’m fine,” Melanie answered with a smile and continued to follow Dr. Austeen.

“I’d like you to meet Catalina Stewsford,” Dr. Austeen introduced us to a black haired young woman.

When Melanie saw her she couldn’t help but smile and said, “It’s nice to meet you.”

Catalina also returned the grin and shook her and Charlie’s hand.

When Dr. Austeen turned his back, Melanie gave her a hug and said, “I didn’t know you would be here Andrea.”

“I had no idea you would be here either Melanie,” Andrea retorted back.

“I’m so glad to see you,” Melanie told her with a laugh.

“Did you see Nathaniel?” Andrea asked slowly.

“Yeah I did and I couldn’t believe it,” Melanie whispered back to her.

“I was quite shocked myself but I’m still not sure if it is him though,” Andrea added.

“What are you guys talking about?” Charlie broke in confused.

“Nothing important. Sorry over there is Charlie” Melanie answered giving an apologetic look towards Charlie.

“So what do you go by now?” Andrea asked.

“I’m Madeline and he is Daniel,” Melanie responded gesturing towards him.

“So he’s your partner now?” Andrea asked.

“I am and you are Catalina here right?” Charlie asked.

“I’ve got to go,” Melanie told her with a wave and dragged Charlie over so they could catch up with Dr. Austeen.

“Nice of you to join us,” Dr. Austeen told them.

“I’m really sorry but I had some questions for Catalina,” Melanie answered apologetically.

“No need to then, I’m glad that you are interested enough in our work,” Dr. Austeen answered with a smile.

“Now this is Dr. Briars. She doesn’t like to be disturbed while working but you can always talk to her if you have any questions,” Dr. Austeen explained.

Melanie and Charlie nodded and quietly left the room.

“Now this is your work area. Across the hall is where we keep the dry ice and the freezer,” Dr. Austeen explained.

Melanie looked around the survey her surroundings and noted the location of each piece of equipment.

“The centrifuges and the Transilluminator and electrophoresis chambers are down the hall. Nathaniel will explain to the both of you what your part in the research is,” Dr. Austeen continued.

“Thank you for the information,” Melanie answered.

“I hope that you will enjoy working here,” Dr. Austeen told them as he headed out.

“We will,” Charlie told him.

“So what is our next step Madeline?” Charlie asked.

“Well, we need to find the source of the disturbance but we first must report the Nathaniel,” Melanie told him.

“So are we supposed to be watching that guy?” Charlie asked.

“I believe so,” Melanie answered slowly.

“So let’s head on out,” Charlie spoke up.

Melanie nodded and headed towards Nathaniel’s office.

“Nathaniel?” Melanie asked.

“Madeline and Daniel, I’ll be with you in a second,” Nathaniel responded with a grin.

“There’s no rush,” Melanie told him with a smile.

Nathaniel returned the grin and looked back down towards his computer and wrote something down and turned back towards her.

“So I’m guessing that you would like to know what you’ll be working on for this project right?” Nathaniel asked.

“Brilliant of you to notice,” Melanie couldn’t help but respond.

“Cute,” Nathaniel responded with a grin.

“So what are we working on?” Charlie butted in.

“As you know our project involves the testing of neurotransmitters on certain parts of the brain. The part of the project that you will be working on includes trying to determine and clone the gene in certain fungal species,” Nathaniel explained.

“Okay, so we will be getting more detailed information of the work that has already been done?” Melanie inquired.

“Yes, the first thing we’d like you guys to do would be to do some reading on the work that has already been done so you will have a better background before you start any new work,” Nathaniel replied with a smile.

“And can we direct any questions we have towards you?” Charlie asked.

“Yes you can ask me or anyone else on the team but it would be best to ask the principal investigator in charge of the paper,” Nathaniel explained.

“Thanks, I will,” Melanie added.

“Here are some papers to start with and I will talk with you guys later,” Nathaniel commented pointing towards a small pile to his right.

Melanie sat down as she flipped through the pages of the first paper but she just could not concentrate on the words on the page.

‘Is it really possible that Nathaniel was him? Was there any way to find out if it really was him? Was I picked because he was here?’ She thought to herself.

“Melanie?” Charlie asked waving a hand in her face and then sighed.

“I’m sorry. Did you want to ask me something?” Melanie asked.

“What is up with you today, Melanie?” Charlie asked.

“I’m really sorry but I was just thinking about a lot of different things but don’t worry I will concentrate on the work on hand,” Melanie answered.

“I’m not worried about that at all. As your friend, I was just worried about you,” Charlie.

“I really appreciate your concern but you don’t have to worry at all because I really am fine,” Melanie assured him.

“Okay then what is the next step?” Charlie asked.

“Well I’m going to gather some information from our fellow agent, why don’t you stay here and do some reading?” Melanie suggested.

“Isn’t there something else I can do?” Charlie asked with a grimace as he pointed towards to the pile of the papers.

“If there was I wouldn’t have asked you to do this and we have to get through these before we can proceed with the job,” Melanie pointed out.

“I suppose you’re right but why don’t I gather info and you read the papers to start?” Charlie suggested.

“First of all, I’m in charge and you don’t have enough experience yet to gather information and besides you don’t know Andrea well enough so you might not get all the information that is available to us,” Melanie explained.

“Okay, I see your point,” Charlie responded as he sat down in his chair in defeat.

“Now that’s a good assistant. I’ll be back a bit later,” Melanie replied with a wave.

“See you later then,” Charlie said with a wave.

Melanie left her lab room and walked towards her friend’s office with a smile and saw her working diligently and decided to surprise her.

“Lilian, report your status,” Melanie asked in a gruff voice and watched as Andrea’s back seemed to stiffen and straighten up.

Melanie suppressed the urge to giggle as she saw her get up and straighten up her clothes and said, “Yes sir. The catalysis is already in place.

Melanie couldn’t help but burst out into giggles causing Andrea to look up.

“Melanie, I can’t believe you would do that to me,” Andrea responded lightly hitting her on the arm.

“You should have seen your face,” Melanie answered bursting into giggles again.

“I can’t believe you would do that to a fellow agent,” Andrea answered in an agitated tone.

“I’m sorry but I just saw you there and I couldn’t help it,” Melanie responded apologetically.

“If you weren’t one of my closest friends, I would never let you get away with something like that,” Andrea added.

“And you know that you’re one of mine as well right?” Melanie asked.

“If I didn’t I wouldn’t help you look up information on him would I?” Andrea asked pulling out a file.

Melanie gave her a big hug and said, “I knew you wouldn’t let me down.”

Andrea gave her the file with a grin. Melanie took the file and opened it eagerly.

“I couldn’t determine for sure who he was in the past but I did find out his background and there seem to be a lot of similarities,” Andrea explained.

“Thanks so much for doing this. It really does help me out a lot,” Melanie told her with a smile.

“I’m sorry that I couldn’t be of any more help,” Andrea said.

“You’ve been really great so far. Thanks. Anyways are you working on the same project that we are?” Melanie asked.

“Well at first, I was sent to work on something that was completely different but then I was told that I would now be transferred over to working with you on your assignment,” Andrea explained.

“It’s good that you’re here. I never expected to see you know who again,” Melanie replied.

“I think though that we should get used to using our given names though,” Andrea reminded her.

“I know but it’s hard though. I’ve been calling you Andrea for ages,” Melanie added.

“Madeline, it is part of our job to adapt isn’t it?” Andrea asked.

“It is Catalina but I’ve never actually worked with you before,” Melanie shot back.

“And I thought here that I was working with the best,” Andrea teased her.

“I am good but I’m not sure if I’m the best,” Melanie replied.

“Oh you are considered one of the top of your field,” a deep voice spoke up.

“I am?” Melanie asked.

“From your records you have sent over to us Madeline. I assure you that only the best applicants are hired here for our projects,” Nathaniel explained.

“Well that is good to here but I of course never think of myself that way,” Melanie answered looking down.

“Modest. I like it,” Nathaniel answered with a grin.

“Is there something that you wanted?” Andrea broke in with a grin.

“Actually I just wanted to see how Madeline and Daniel are doing. I want to make sure that they are as comfortable as possible,” Nathaniel replied.

“Things are going pretty well. I see that I have a lot of reading to do,” Melanie responded.

“I see that you and Catalina are getting along rather well. It’s almost as if you guys were already friends,” Nathaniel commented.

“Well, what can I say? We seem to have a lot of the same views on things,” Melanie answered.

“I think I can see that, you seem like a very friendly person. That is good for us, you will get along with everyone great and that will definitely make things easier for us all to collaborate,” Nathaniel answered.

“I will definitely help her all I can,” Andrea broke in.

“I’ve got to get back to my reading,” Melanie replied tearing herself away from the conversation.

“If you have any questions, my door is always open,” Nathaniel added as she was leaving.

Melanie smiled back and walked out of the room feeling rather flustered. She definitely felt something between her and Nathaniel even if it was possible that he wasn’t him.

“You like her don’t you?” Andrea asked.

“Excuse me? I was merely trying to help out a new colleague,” Nathaniel replied.

“Right, you were totally into her. If I wasn’t here you two would still be trying to have a conversation,” Andrea replied.

“Cat, I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Nathaniel answered back.

“I think she was into you too,” Andrea added looking up slightly and saw the features of his face seem to light up just a tab.

“You think?” Nathaniel asked with a hopeful look in his eyes.

“I thought you wouldn’t care,” Andrea teased him.

“I don’t. I just was curious that’s all,” Nathaniel replied nonchalantly.

“Well then I would think so,” Andrea replied.

Nathaniel smiled grew a bit bigger and then waved a goodbye.

Here is a portion of what I wrote for nanowirmo.

Any comments would be really useful. Thanks
