Palin sends the cringe meter off the dial

No one will be more relieved than John McCain if a major crisis erupts on Thursday to overshadow the debate between the vice-presidential candidates, Sarah Palin and Joe Biden.

Alaska's one-term governor is hugely popular with voters, but she is also a liability for the Republican ticket, as her painful-to-watch interview last week with Katie ( Read more... )

Well, that was a well-reasoned... hang on, no it wasn't. mattshepherd September 28 2008, 18:34:12 UTC
Ever hear of the separation of church and state? You guys are all for it when it comes to abortion, but it doesn't seem to exist when it comes to your desire to play around with other peoples' money.

That... doesn't even make sense. What "guys?" I have "guys?" Will they help me install this drop ceiling? I've been putting that off for like weeks. Seriously... what in the world do you even mean? That people are using religion as an excuse to "play with other peoples' money"? Wh-- when? How? Who said that? Where did abortion come from? Do you have a list of Rush Limbaugh talking points that you refer to when you get called on BS?

My original point, before your bewildering rebuttal, was that a sweeping judgement of anybody unemployed as just needing to be told "get a job" is ignorant and, coming from a self-professed Christian, profoundly hypocritical. Emblematic of the breed of "Christianity" that has taken over right-wing politics and poisoned the well with greed, ignorance and fear: one of the things, dragging this back on topic, that makes (back on topic!) Palin so problematic.

I don't think you're doing a very good job of digging yourself out of that with weird tangential connections between abortion and state assistance for the unemployed. But feel free to keep shoveling.

The separation of church and state is as American as it gets. It was established by the founding fathers of the United States as a safeguard to keep the nation from falling into religious oligarchy, where people's rights and freedoms are subservient to the narrow, fanatical views of the wild-eyed faithful. So far, it's done a pretty good job, except for a few ill-educated people that actually think the founding fathers wrote the "under God" Pledge of Allegiance, like say (back on topic!) Palin.

Jesus said he came to fulfill the law, not to do away with it.

Jesus came to give a New Commandment: If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. ... This is my command: Love each other.

Note that he did not say "love each other -- actually hang on, it's okay to hate the poor and helpless and when others are in need dismiss them with get a job, turning your back on all but those you deem worthy of your esteemed and noble aid."

It was a rather simpler thing he said. "Love each other."

It's one doozy of a commandment.

I encourage you, before casting stones, before criticising the speck in others' eyes, to consider whether you are without sin. Whether you maybe have a beam in your own eye that needs to be tended to. "Get a job!" Is that your response to "Love each other?" Is that how you manifest Jesus' desire to feel his joy in you through love? That's what you get from it? "Get a job!"??? Such a response to the needy is directly counter to the very notion of charity -- not just of money, but of spirit. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. -- 1 Corinthians 13, KJV. How are you truly upholding Christian values by casting cruel judgement on all less fortunate than yourself?

Jesus again: render to Caesar that which is Caesar's. The "mine mine mine it's my money mine I'm keeping my money and taxes are all evil devil theft" -- that wasn't him, friend. That was somebody else, from rather a different place.
