Hmm... This is really weird. I've posted the details in brief on my blog but I thought I'd go into detail here.
It started yesterday. I had just got home from a sleep over at Tay's house and I went to check e-mail. I couldn't log in. I didn't think much of it because I sometimes get weird messages like this that disallow me to send e-mail. I decided to see if the problem was addressed in my control panel... I got sidetracked though when I found that Phpwebhosting had a new feature where you can easily see how much disk space you're taking up along with how big the files and folders on your domain are.
I noticed that quite a few of my sites were really big. My Zelgadiss shrine was 8.8mb alone. Which is huge for a website that doesn't have any sound files or what have you (yet). I mentioned it to Seiko, who was a little worried about it because of the project we're going to be working on in a few month's time (I won't talk about it) and that we'd need a lot of space. I told her not to worry because I was going to go and clean up the directory. I have a habit of leaving a lot of old layout images laying around my folders and don't clean them up for a while. However, I couldn't log into my FTP server. o_o; Well.. I put two and two together: both FTP server and e-mail server at Genrou.com not working? Not a coincedence. Genrou.com was working however so I didn't think I was in too much trouble. I sent a request to phpwebhosting:
Hello!
I recently logged onto my computer and I'm having problems logging into my e-mail and FTP server. The error messages I receive are as follows:
FTP: "Connection failure. Unable to resolve server name."
E-Mail: "Netscape is unable to locate the server mail.genrou.com. Please check the server name and try again."
I'm not having problems with my FTP program as I can connect alright to other servers. I can access my domain fine, however. I wasn't sure if it was because you guys might have been working on the server or if a third party has messed with my domain setup. I know my password and username are alright since I can access my control panel (and hence me sending this request :). Thanks for your help,
I got the reply to this today, and the guy said that he couldn't find anything wrong with the account. So he said that he would get a level two tech to look into it and the topic was closed. I posted a reply to this and re-opened the topic:
It seems as if I can't access Genrou.com at all now; it keeps saying that the server cannot be found. I checked the name servers with my registrar and everything seems to be alright with that.. And the domain doesn't expire until August 21, 2003, a year from now.
Yes, I can't even access Genrou.com through a browser now. I suspect that it was just a cached version of the domain that I was looking at last night and it had expired today. Seiko can't access the domain either. I'm a bit more worried now but I don't think it's anything serious. I had thought that it was possible that the domain had expired since I recall it does in the month of August (I didn't remember the date or year though)... however, that's not the case. Genrou.com expires August 21, 2003. Even if there was a mistake with the year, the date is August 20 and problems started happening on August 18-19 (I wouldn't know about the 18th since I wasn't home at the time).
Hopefully phpwebhosting will get back to me as soon as possible.. in the meantime, I'm going to work on reducing the image size for my Zelgadiss shrine. I figured out that it was the images that took up all the space. Larger images can be reduced by at least 50k on average and smaller images are reduced by at least 20k on average (both without losing image quality). Bleh.
