That day was special for Chinen. He had prepared his words of confession days before and then he was ready for it. He was going to tell Yamada about his feeling.
Holding his gift on his left hand, he run to his classroom to find the older boy. But when he opened the door, he wasn’t there. So he continued his searching around the school.
Chinen arrived at the third floor, where the club rooms were there. He thought Yamada might be having his club activities then. Just when he was walking pass the Hip Hop Club room, he heard someone’s familiar voice from that room.
“Eh? It sounds like Ryosuke’s,” Chinen thought.
Curious, he peeped through a crack of the door. And he was right. Yamada was in that room, but he wasn’t alone. He was with a girl from their class.
“What are Ryosuke doing with Shida-san there?”
I t didn’t look like they were doing some school assignments or something like that, as they were embracing each other. Yamada’s arm was around her shoulder and her head was on his left shoulder. He seemed like whispering something that made Shida giggled and pinched his cheek.
The scene in front of him made his chest grew hot, in jealously. And he reached his limit as he saw Yamada took Shida’s chin with his other hand and kissed her sweetly. He gasped and lost his grip on the gift he had held. That made the couple startled and stopped what they were doing.
“W-Who’s that?!” Yamada turned his head to the door.
The door was slowly opened. “I-It’s me.”
“Chinen-kun?!” Shida’s face red from embarrassment of being caught red-handed.
“C-Chinen, what are you doing there?”
“I-I was looking for you and when I heard your voice in this room, I was going to open it but I didn’t expect that you and Shida-san were… Well…”
“So you saw us?” Yamada asked him.
“H-Hai… I’m sorry!!” Chinen bowed his head. “I really didn’t know what was happened!”
“Daijobu, Chinen-kun. It wasn’t your fault,” Shida smiled.
“Sou. It’s my fault. I didn’t expect someone would come to this room for today. As I knew Hip Hop Club didn’t have practice today.” Yamada blushed while scratching his head.
Chinen gave his fake wide grin.
“I don’t know you two are together! Since when you’re going out?”
“W-Well, actually since a month ago. But Chinen, you won’t tell anyone about this, will you? You know, we aren’t allowed dating. If someone knew this, I could be-“
“Don’t worry!” Chinen lifted his thumb up and beamed. “Your secret is safe with me!”
The couple sighed in relieve.
“Thank you, Chinen-kun.”
“Thanks, Chinen,” Yamada gave his trademark smile. “You’re really a best friend.”
“No prob.”
Chinen turned and ready to leave the room when Yamada called him again.
“Hey, you said you were looking for me, right? Did you have something to tell me?”
Chinen froze from his steps.
“I…” he felt another stab on his heart as he remembered what his purpose before.
“Nothing,” Chinen waved his hand without turning. “Ja na!”
With that, he run out from that room.
~*~*~*
He was alright. He told it to himself. It’s okay to see Yamada embraced other girl. It’s okay to see him lovingly whispered something on her ear. Even it’s okay to see him kissed her! He was alright!
At least he thought so. Still running along the street, he told himself everything would be okay. But, the more he told himself to be strong, the more his heart shattered. It wasn’t alright at all!! He had loved him for years and he had known him long before her! That was unfair!
He continued running on the street, ignoring other people who were accidentally hit by him. He didn’t care if his lungs were going to explode. He didn’t care when rain started pouring down on him and soaked his Horikoshi suit.
He stopped after he was tripped and fell to the ground. Rain poured on him heavily, like it was trying to wash away all his depression. He stayed in that lying position, with his front body glued to the wet road. He didn’t care if he was going to die right then. Slowly, he closed his eyes.
“Chinen-kun?”
Suddenly, somebody’s voice called his name. Chinen opened up his blurry eyes. It was still raining, but he didn’t feel heavy droplets on his body anymore. He lifted his head upward to the mysterious guy.
“Are you okay? Were you tripped? Any wounds?” he offered him a hand to help him got up while his other hand holding an umbrella above him.
“Yuma-kun…”
Chinen accepted his hand. Slowly he stood up.
“Whoa, you’re really soaked! Here, wear my jacket,” Yuma took off his jacket and then wrapped it around Chinen’s shaking body.
“Thanks,” Chinen smiled weakly to him.
“Let’s go to my apartment. You should dry yourself immediately if you don’t want to catch a cold.”
Yuma took his shoulder and guided him to his house not far from there.
~*~*~*
After arriving at his house, Yuma offered Chinen his dry cloth and towel. Chinen stayed in Yuma’s room when Yuma prepared a cup of hot chocolate for him.
“Here. Drink it to make you feel better,” Yuma gave him the hot chocolate after came back to his room.
“Thanks,” was his reply. Chinen hadn’t said anything besides simple “thanks” or “un” since Yuma saved him. Yuma looked at him worriedly.
“Chinen-kun, what happened actually?”
Chinen sipped his chocolate carefully. His eyes never met Yuma’s gaze.
“Were you sick and fainted?”
“No. I was tripped. That’s all.”
“Uso,” Yuma crossed his arms in front of his chest. “You looked so pale and… shattered. Something bad happened?”
Chinen didn’t know whether he should tell him or not about his problem.
“I…” Chinen spoke up. “This afternoon…”
“Yes?”
“…Ryosuke…”
Yuma frowned. What the hell he had done to Chinen?? “What did he do to you?”
“He…” Chinen’s memory flashbacked to the scene when Yamada was with Shida, embracing and kissing. And his promise to Yamada. “He rejected me.”
Yuma could feel Chinen’s broken heart inside his chest. He knew that Chinen loved Yamada, but the truth was Yamada didn’t love him back. It made him sad too, even though he had a crush toward Chinen.
“That boy… He’s so stupid for rejecting a wonderful person like you.”
Yuma reached Chinen’s hand and gave him a gentle squeeze. “You deserved someone better.”
Finally Chinen looked to Yuma’s bright eyes. After that he smiled, feeling much better than before.
“Thank you, Yuma-kun.”
Grinning, Yuma placed his arm around Chinen’s shoulder. “That’s what friend for, ne?”
~*~*~*
Weeks had passed since that day. Yuma thought that Chinen had been recovered from his broken heart. He could smile again, laughing together with him and Yamada. Even he and Yamada chatted each other like nothing had happened. But he didn’t know that all Chinen’s smile were fake.
Deep inside his heart, Chinen was still shattered. He couldn’t heal it, even though he already tried everything. Busying himself with study and work didn’t help either. He always tried to give smiles to everyone as he was hiding his feeling, so nobody could see him as a sentimental guy.
He even tried to give a smile to Shida when she came to their rehearsal hall, of course to find her Ryosuke.
“Anou… Chinen-kun, is Ryosuke here?”
“Ryosuke? He’s right there,” Chinen pointed his finger to Yamada who were drinking his water.
“Thanks,” Shida beamed and bounced to approach her boyfriend on the corner.
Yamada seemed so happy when he saw her coming, and it made Chinen annoyed. He smiled all the time when she was talking to him.
Yuma saw that and came to Chinen’s place.
“I don’t know Yamada-kun is with Mirai Shida, that famous actress. Sugoi ne?” Yuma commented as they saw she was feeding him with bento she brought.
Chinen didn’t say anything. He left him instead.
“Eh? Where are you going?” Yuma followed him exited the hall.
Chinen kept walking in incredible speed. “Chinen-kun! Wait!”
Yuma was confused with Chinen’s behavior. He was okay until Shida came and-
Wait a minute.
“Chinen-kun! Are you jealous with them?”
Chinen didn’t stop and instead running to their dressing room.
“Wait! Answer me!”
Yuma finally stopped him after grabbing his arm and held him still.
“Let me go!”
“No! Unless you tell me what’s wrong with you!”
“I’m alright!” Chinen struggled to free himself.
“Chinen-kun, you don’t have to lie to me…” Yuma tighten his grip.
Chinen finally gave up. “Ok, fine! I’m jealous! Satisfied? Now let me go!”
Yuma freed him from his grip.
“I thought you had already forgotten about it.”
“I tried, Yuma-kun. I tried but…” Chinen turned backing him. “I can’t. Everytime I see them together, the wound is opened back. It- It really hurt…” he grabbed his chest.
Chinen fell on his knees to the cold floor under him.
“Chinen-kun!” Yuma kneeled down and grabbed Chinen’s shoulder.
“I’m so pathetic… I’m such a coward… If I told him earlier, I might be-“
“Forget it, Chinen-kun!” Yuma had lost his patience. “They’re already together!”
“But I love him too much! I just can’t!”
“Then try to love someone else! There is someone else who loves you more than anything!”
“Who love me, anyway?!”
“It’s me! And I love you so much!”
Yuma forcibly pulled Chinen towards him and crushed his mouth with Chinen’s. Chinen’s eyes widen in shock, but he did nothing. He let Yuma wrapped his arm around his waist and his other hand holding his face. Yuma brushed his lips a lot softer than before, savoring Chinen’s sweet lips.
But he felt no reaction from Chinen. He didn’t kiss him back, but didn’t pulled away either. So Yuma broke his kiss, only to see Chinen with unreadable expression on his face.
“I-I’m sorry, I lost my control…” Yuma blushed and pulled away from Chinen. He was going to leave the room, but he was stopped by Chinen. He grabbed his arms and forced him to kneel back.
Chinen’s eyes were full of hopes then. Hope to be loved.
And suddenly it was Chinen’s turn to shock him. He leaned forward and kissed him hard with a lot more passion. Yuma gasped as Chinen bit his bottom lips and shoved his tongue in. To calm him down, Yuma hugged his back and rubbed it gently. And it did. Chinen calmed down. He kissed gentler.
As they kissed, Yuma felt his face became wet. Chinen was crying silently. That’s the first time he saw Chinen crying, because he once told him he would never cry in front of other people. Yuma broke away and wiped his tears from his beautiful face.
“You’re crying,” Yuma stared at Chinen’s sparkled eyes. “The first time I see it.”
“Yuma-kun, can you heal my heart, please? Please, make me love you! Make me forget him!” Chinen snuggled to Yuma’s chest.
“I’ll try my best. Chinen-kun, I promise I will make you fall in love with me. Soon enough.”
