Goddamnit, I've run through like five variations, the memory of "Find/Replace" looks like an annotated encyclopedia of chivalry, and the only one I LIKE is "paladin."

Mark Twain was right. Damn him ( Read more... )

This is going to sound terribly silly...but what was Mark Twain right about?

It's possible it was the bit about redheads being descended from cats, but I'm guessing there's a different quote at work here...

*grin* "he difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug."

*laughs* Aha! Much more appropriate, and so true!

Sometimes you have to be satisfied with lightning bugs, they do have a rather pleasing glow, and they're far better than a dung beetle, if you're looking to inspire (I say that, but am proven wrong on several thousand counts by the ancient Egyptians).

Lightning is more impressive when it is sporadic rather than constant, in any case.

Have you read Elizabeth Moon's Deed of Paksenarrion? Her paladin is sort of accidental.

At once!

Actually that's the title of the omnibus - the individual books of the trilogy are Sheepfarmer's Daughter, Divided Allegiance, and Oath of Gold. By Elizabeth Moon. Amazing books - prepare to be sucked in...

Nothing wrong with "Paladin," and if you get too much guff about it, you can write a foreword about where D&D got it, and that EverQuest and Warcrack then snaffled it off there, and how there can be different kinds of holy warrior.

Just like there can be blood elves, and night elves, and high elves...

*grin* And ironically, I have never felt such a twinge with elves, or orcs, or rangers, or bards or anything else, EXCEPT "paladin."

Well, okay, I'd probably balk at "lich." And "displacer beast" is right out. But that's a different sort of thing.

You're probably okay with 'paladin', so long as you don't have the character bubblehearth to get away from the big bad monster.

How long does it take to hearth away? My little bubbles only work for 6 seconds, and the next rank only for 8...

(Besides, the Paladin should be the one who DIES while everyone ELSE hearths away. And the hunter who feigns death should be the one with the jumper cables to rez the Paladin or priest. But that's another story.)

Why don't you invent a name, like "Excelsior Knight" or some oddity?

I tried. It doesn't work.

If that makes any sense.

I think so.
Could be worse. You could be trying to write a Paladin of Ganesh, who only gets a 50lb key instead of a sword.
