Or dissociated by shock - not so much wilfully refusing to deal, as the mind simply taking refuge in the practical.

I particularly adore the great practicality of all concerned, for this is indeed the way of people who have raised, and cherished, and slaughtered, chickens. I know. :>

I do hope there may yet be an illustrated version, but my mind creates quite vividly as it is.
