The last time I was in the Quarter we found a gallery that had kinetic wood sculptures by David C. Roy.
Stuff like this.

And yeah, I know all about seeing the originals of the work you really admire. I've gotten six inches away from a Walt Kelly drawing and reverently held my breath as I looked at the subtleties I'd never seen before.
If you're in town for much longer my mom could probably recommend some places to go eat that are tasty, affordable, and outside the tourist areas. And would be very very polite about asking you to sign her giant water-demon library poster.
