You can't pin this one on the Hamburglar.

McDonald's is weighing whether to yank the popular double cheeseburger from its Dollar Menu because of the high cost of cheese.

Already, some McDonald's franchises are selling the double-cheeseburger with one slice of cheese instead of two and calling it a "double hamburger with cheese."

Other McDonald's outlets have started selling the double cheeseburger for $1.09 to $1.10.

Still others have replaced the double cheeseburger on the Dollar Menu with a double hamburger - an option that McDonald's is considering for the entire chain.

As the cost of beef also rises, McDonald's may expand its mid-range menu - with food selling for $1.30 to $2 - to keep budget-conscious customers from abandoning the Golden Arches altogether.

"We know customers are facing tough times in this economy," McDonald's honcho Don Thompson told The Wall Street Journal, which broke the burger story Monday.

The $1 double cheeseburger is considered the "anchor" of the eight-item Dollar Menu, which was launched in 2003.

That stroke of fast-food genius has been credited with keeping McDonald's 14,000 U.S. restaurants hopping in an uncertain economy while other chains struggle to stay afloat.
